Past perfect and the subjunctive in a heritage argument

المَاضِي التَّامُّ وَالنَّصْبُ فِي حُجَّةِ التُّرَاثِ

The past perfect for what was built, the three subjunctive triggers for what must be done, and a Type 2 conditional for past neglect.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

كَانَتِ الأَجْيَالُ السَّابِقَةُ قَدْ بَنَتْ هٰذِهِ الرَّوَائِعَ المِعْمَارِيَّةَ
What to notice

Intergenerational past perfect.

مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ يُرَمِّمَ المُتَخَصِّصُونَ المَوَاقِعَ التَّالِفَةَ
What to notice

مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ + subjunctive.

لَوْ أُولِيَ التُّرَاثُ اهْتِمَامًا كَافِيًا، لَكَانَتْ حَالَتُهُ أَفْضَلَ
What to notice

Type 2 regret over neglect.

1

Intergenerational past perfect

كَانَ / كَانَتْ قَدْ + past

What earlier generations had built or documented.

كَانَتِ الأَجْيَالُ قَدْ بَنَتْ هٰذِهِ المَعَالِمَكَانَ قَدْ تَمَّ تَوْثِيقُ كَثِيرٍ مِنْهَا
2

Volition

يَتَطَلَّبُ أَنْ + subjunctive

What conservation requires.

يَتَطَلَّبُ الحِفَاظُ أَنْ تُعْطِيَهُ الحُكُومَاتُ أَوْلَوِيَّةً
3

Necessity and purpose

مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ … لِكَيْ …

An essential action for a purpose.

مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ يُرَمِّمَ المُتَخَصِّصُونَ المَوَاقِعَ لِكَيْ تَظَلَّ شَاهِدَةً
4

Type 2 regret

لَوْ + past → لَـ

The neglect that should not have happened.

لَوْ أُولِيَ التُّرَاثُ اهْتِمَامًا كَافِيًا، لَكَانَتْ حَالَتُهُ أَفْضَلَ
StructureRoleExample
كَانَ قَدْwhat was builtكَانَتْ قَدْ بَنَتْ
يَتَطَلَّبُ أَنْwhat it requiresأَنْ تُعْطِيَ
مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْwhat is essentialأَنْ يُرَمِّمَ
لَوْ … لَـpast neglectلَوْ أُولِيَ … لَكَانَ
1
The past perfect carries the intergenerational argument

كَانَتِ الأَجْيَالُ السَّابِقَةُ قَدْ بَنَتْ هٰذِهِ الرَّوَائِعَ لِتَشْهَدَ عَلَى إِبْدَاعِ الحَضَارَاتِ. The past perfect says what earlier generations had already done — the foundation of an argument about our duty to preserve it.

2
Three triggers make the case

يَتَطَلَّبُ الحِفَاظُ عَلَى التُّرَاثِ أَنْ تُعْطِيَهُ الحُكُومَاتُ أَوْلَوِيَّةً (volition). مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ يُرَمِّمَ المُتَخَصِّصُونَ المَوَاقِعَ (necessity) لِكَيْ تَظَلَّ شَاهِدَةً (purpose). Three triggers, one persuasive case.
