What a Band 5 answer looks like

Three answers to “مَا رَأْيُكَ فِي الضَّغْطِ الدِّرَاسِيِّ؟” — notice what lifts each band.

1Band 2 — minimal

A bare opinion, no development.

الضَّغْطُ الدِّرَاسِيُّ صَعْبٌ. لَا أُحِبُّهُ.

2Band 3 — adequate

An opinion with one reason.

يُعَانِي كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الطُّلَّابِ مِنَ الضَّغْطِ. فِي رَأْيِي هُوَ مُفِيدٌ أَحْيَانًا لِأَنَّهُ يُحَفِّزُ.

3Band 5 — developed

Evidence + concession-refutation + conditional + subjunctive.

يُشَارُ إِلَى أَنَّ الضَّغْطَ فِي تَصَاعُدٍ. صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ بَعْضَهُ يُحَفِّزُ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ إِذَا تَجَاوَزَ حَدَّهُ سَيُؤَدِّي إِلَى الاِحْتِرَاقِ. لِذَا يَتَطَلَّبُ الأَمْرُ أَنْ تُوَفِّرَ المَدَارِسُ بِيئَةً أَقَلَّ ضَغْطًا.

Communication — 15 marks

5 marks per question across three questions.
Band 5 fully develops the answer with opinion, reasons and examples.
Band 3 is an adequate answer; Band 1 is minimal.

Quality of Language — 5 marks

Band 5 consistently uses complex structures.
At least two tenses, a conditional and a subjunctive across the answers.
Range is rewarded even if a vowel is occasionally imperfect.

Examiner note

Development is the key to Communication Band 5: a two-sentence answer caps at about Band 3, while a four-to-five-sentence answer with opinion, evidence and conditional analysis reaches Band 5.
