Listening
Three social-issues texts. Read the questions first, decide whether each targets the thesis, a concession, a refutation or a subjunctive, then use the script.
Text 1 · an academic on social inequality
Eight questions: thesis, concession, refutation, subjunctive and both conditionals
Text 1 script

Part B1 · 10 marks
Reading
A social-mobility argument carrying a concession, a refutation, the past perfect and both conditional types. Prove every answer from the Arabic.
Part B2 · 20 marks
Writing
A short social-policy form, then a 150–165 word argumentative essay.
Question 1 · social policy form
Complete five details in Arabic
- القَضِيَّةُ الاجْتِمَاعِيَّةُ الرَّئِيسِيَّةُ الَّتِي تُعَالِجُهَا
The main social issue you are addressing
- دَلِيلٌ إِحْصَائِيٌّ بِكَلَامٍ مَنْقُولٍ (أَكَّدَ … أَنَّ)
A statistical piece of evidence using reported speech
- تَسْلِيمٌ بِالرَّأْيِ المُضَادِّ بِاسْتِعْمَالِ «صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ» + مُثْبَتٌ
A concession of the opposing view using صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ + indicative
- رَدٌّ بِاسْتِعْمَالِ «غَيْرَ أَنَّ»
A refutation using غَيْرَ أَنَّ
- خَاتِمَةٌ بِاسْتِعْمَالِ «وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَقَ» + فِعْلٍ مَنْصُوبٍ
A conclusion using وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَقَ + a subjunctive verb
Question 2 · argumentative essay
الهِجْرَةُ تُثْرِي المُجْتَمَعَاتِ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا تُضْعِفُهَا — هَلْ تَتَّفِقُ؟
Write 150–165 words as a full argument: thesis, evidence, concession (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ), refutation (غَيْرَ أَنَّ) and a conclusion (وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَقَ + subjunctive). Also include reported speech, a Type 2 conditional and an extended subjunctive trigger.
Your work stays in this browser unless you clear it.
Part C · 10 marks
Speaking
An international social-justice conference role play and a topic conversation. The concession-refutation architecture, the extended subjunctive triggers and both conditional types are all assessed.
Role play · an international social-justice conference
Four prompts
- قَدِّمِ القَضِيَّةَ الاجْتِمَاعِيَّةَ الَّتِي تُعَالِجُهَا (دَلِيلٌ + كَلَامٌ مَنْقُولٌ مُتَوَقَّعٌ).
Introduce the social issue you are addressing; evidence and reported speech expected. - قُلْ مَا الَّذِي تُوَافِقُ عَلَيْهِ فِي المَوْقِفِ المُضَادِّ (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ + تَسْلِيمٌ حَقِيقِيٌّ — عَلَامَةُ دِقَّةٍ).
Say what you agree with in the opposing position using صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ + a real concession (an accuracy mark). - اعْرِضْ حُجَّتَكَ الأَقْوَى (غَيْرَ أَنَّ + رَدٌّ — عَلَامَةُ دِقَّةٍ).
Give your strongest counter-argument using غَيْرَ أَنَّ + a refutation (an accuracy mark). - اذْكُرْ مَا الَّذِي يَتَطَلَّبُهُ الحَلُّ (يَتَطَلَّبُ أَنْ + مَنْصُوبٌ).
State what the solution requires using يَتَطَلَّبُ أَنْ + subjunctive.
Topic conversation
Three questions
- مَا أَكْبَرُ تَحَدٍّ اجْتِمَاعِيٍّ يُوَاجِهُ العَالَمَ العَرَبِيَّ اليَوْمَ؟ (حُجَّةٌ كَامِلَةٌ + دَلِيلٌ مُتَوَقَّعٌ)
What is the biggest social challenge facing the Arab world today? (a full argument with evidence expected). - هَلْ تَعْتَقِدُ أَنَّ التَّكْنُولُوجِيَا تُعَمِّقُ أَمْ تُقَلِّلُ عَدَمَ المُسَاوَاةِ؟ (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ / غَيْرَ أَنَّ مُتَوَقَّعٌ)
Do you think technology deepens or reduces inequality? (concession-refutation expected). - لَوْ كُنْتَ فِي مَوْقِعِ السُّلْطَةِ، مَاذَا كُنْتَ سَتُغَيِّرُ أَوَّلًا؟ (شَرْطٌ مِنَ النَّوْعِ الثَّانِي مَطْلُوبٌ)
If you were in a position of power, what would you change first? (Type 2 conditional required).

Mark scheme
Apply these criteria to Question 2 and to the speaking components.
Task completion (TC) — 5 marks
- A clear thesis (a position, not just a topic) and statistical evidence with reported speech.
- A genuine concession (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ) and a clear refutation (غَيْرَ أَنَّ).
- A formal conclusion connector (وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَقَ) + a subjunctive; 150-165 words.
Range — 5 marks
- Reported speech with a verb other than قَالَ, and a Type 2 conditional.
- A subjunctive trigger from P4 or P5 (يَتَطَلَّبُ / يُطَالِبُ / يَصِرُّ / يَمْنَعُ / يَرْفُضُ أَنْ …).
- A concession structure (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ / بِالرَّغْمِ مِنْ) and a formal conclusion connector.
Accuracy — 5 marks
- The subjunctive ـَ marker after every trigger, and correct أَنْ vs أَنَّ (2 marks).
- The Type 2 لَـ prefix in the result clause (2 marks).
- The correct indicative after صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ (1 mark) — the primary P5 accuracy criterion.
Role play — communication and accuracy — 4 marks
- Communication (2): all four prompts are addressed clearly and relevantly.
- Accuracy (2): a genuine concession (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ) in prompt 2 and a refutation (غَيْرَ أَنَّ) in prompt 3.
- The issue is introduced with evidence and reported speech.
Topic conversation — communication and quality of language — 6 marks
- Communication (3): answers are developed with point, reason and example.
- Quality of language (3): a full argument (Q1), a concession-refutation (Q2) and a Type 2 conditional (Q3) all appear.
- Q3 opens with لَوْ (Type 2 required); a candidate who answers with إِذَا is avoiding the conditional. Credit spontaneous صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ / غَيْرَ أَنَّ in Q2.
Accuracy focus
Build a complete argument and distinguish factual أَنَّ from subjunctive أَنْ.
