Reading conditionals for attitude

قِرَاءَةُ الشَّرْطِ لِفَهْمِ المَوْقِفِ

A reading toolkit: classify conditionals by particle, read the writer's attitude from the type, and match result markers in a gap.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

إِذَا زُرْتَ الأُرْدُنَّ، لَنْ تَنْدَمَ
What to notice

Type 1: a real recommendation.

لَوِ اهْتَمَّتِ الدَّوْلَةُ بِالتُّرَاثِ، لَمَا تَدَهْوَرَ
What to notice

Type 2: implicit criticism.

يَدُلُّ اخْتِيَارُ «لَوْ» عَلَى مَوْقِفٍ نَاقِدٍ
What to notice

Naming the R3 inference.

1

Classify by particle

إِذَا (real) · لَوْ (hypothetical)

The particle fixes whether the case is real or counterfactual.

إِذَا زُرْتَ الأُرْدُنَّ، لَنْ تَنْدَمَ → real recommendationلَوْ نُظِّمَتِ الزِّيَارَاتُ، لَكَانَ أَفْضَلَ → counterfactual
2

Read the attitude (R3)

Type 2 → implicit criticism

A counterfactual implies the condition was not met, hinting at criticism.

لَوْ اهْتَمَّتِ الدَّوْلَةُ بِالتُّرَاثِ، لَمَا تَدَهْوَرَ → the writer finds current care inadequate
3

Match the result marker

إِذَا … سَـ · لَوْ … لَـ

The gap's marker must fit the conditional type.

إِذَا حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، سَتُوَفِّرُلَوْ حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، لَوَفَّرْتَ
4

Reading verbs

يَدُلُّ عَلَى · يَكْشِفُ عَنْ

Use precise verbs to state what the text shows.

يَدُلُّ اخْتِيَارُ لَوْ عَلَى نَقْدٍ ضِمْنِيٍّيَكْشِفُ النَّصُّ عَنْ مَوْقِفٍ نَاقِدٍ
ParticleTypeSignals
إِذَاType 1 (real)a genuine possibility / recommendation
لَوْType 2 (hypothetical)a counterfactual / implicit criticism
سَـ resultType 1pairs with إِذَا
لَـ resultType 2pairs with لَوْ
1
Conditional type signals the writer's attitude

إِذَا (Type 1) means the writer sees the case as a real possibility — often a recommendation: إِذَا زُرْتَ الأُرْدُنَّ، لَنْ تَنْدَمَ. لَوْ (Type 2) means a counterfactual, often an implicit criticism: لَوْ زَارَ المُسَافِرُونَ المَوَاقِعَ بِأَعْدَادٍ أَقَلَّ، لَكَانَتْ حَالَتُهَا أَفْضَلَ.

2
The result marker tells you the type

A سَـ result belongs to a real إِذَا conditional; a لَـ result belongs to a counterfactual لَوْ conditional. In a gap-fill, match the result marker to the particle: إِذَا … سَـ, لَوْ … لَـ.

8 questions
1Which conditional is real (Type 1)?

2Which conditional is hypothetical (Type 2)?

3What does a Type 2 conditional often reveal (R3)?

4Complete the gap in a real conditional: إِذَا حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، ___ المَالَ.

5Complete the gap in a counterfactual: لَوْ حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، ___ المَالَ.

6«لَوِ اهْتَمَّتِ الدَّوْلَةُ بِالتُّرَاثِ، لَمَا تَدَهْوَرَ» reveals that the writer thinks current care is …

7Complete: يَدُلُّ اخْتِيَارُ «لَوْ» ___ نَقْدٍ ضِمْنِيٍّ.

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

إِذَا حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، لَوَفَّرْتَ المَالَ.

إِذَا حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، سَتُوَفِّرُ المَالَ.

A real إِذَا conditional takes a سَـ result, not لَـ.

لَوْ حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، سَتُوَفِّرُ المَالَ.

لَوْ حَجَزْتَ مُبَكِّرًا، لَوَفَّرْتَ المَالَ.

A counterfactual لَوْ conditional takes a لَـ result.

يَدُلُّ اخْتِيَارُ لَوْ بِنَقْدٍ ضِمْنِيٍّ.

يَدُلُّ اخْتِيَارُ لَوْ عَلَى نَقْدٍ ضِمْنِيٍّ.

Success checklist

  • One conditional named as Type 1 (real) and one as Type 2 (hypothetical).
  • An explanation of the implicit criticism a Type 2 reveals.
  • The correct reading verb (يَدُلُّ عَلَى / يَكْشِفُ عَنْ).
