Benefit verbs and their complements

أَفْعَالُ الفَائِدَةِ وَمُتَعَلِّقَاتُهَا

One decision governs every sentence in this lesson: does the verb take a direct object, or does it take مِنْ?

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

يُقَوِّي التَّمْرِينُ العَضَلَاتِ
What to notice

A direct object with no preposition.

يُقَلِّلُ مِنْ خَطَرِ أَمْرَاضِ القَلْبِ
What to notice

مِنْ is fixed with يُقَلِّلُ.

كُنْتُ أَتَمَرَّنُ مَرَّةً فِي الأُسْبُوعِ
What to notice

كَانَ plus a present verb for a past habit.

1

Direct-object benefit verbs

يُقَوِّي / يُحَسِّنُ / يُنَشِّطُ + accusative

Form II verbs of this group take a direct object with no preposition.

يُقَوِّي التَّمْرِينُ العَضَلَاتِتُحَسِّنُ الرِّيَاضَةُ الحَالَةَ المِزَاجِيَّةَ
2

Benefit verbs with مِنْ

يُقَلِّلُ / يَزِيدُ / يُخَفِّفُ + مِنْ + genitive

These describe raising or lowering a quantity, and the thing measured follows مِنْ.

يُقَلِّلُ المَشْيُ مِنْ خَطَرِ أَمْرَاضِ القَلْبِيَزِيدُ التَّمْرِينُ مِنْ قُدْرَةِ التَّحَمُّلِ
3

يُسَاعِدُ عَلَى

يُسَاعِدُ عَلَى + genitive verbal noun

Form III with a fixed preposition, followed by a verbal noun.

يُسَاعِدُ النَّوْمُ عَلَى اسْتِعَادَةِ النَّشَاطِ
4

Past habit against present habit

كَانَ + present vs a present verb

كُنْتُ أَتَمَرَّنُ describes what you used to do; أَتَمَرَّنُ describes what you do now.

كُنْتُ أَتَمَرَّنُ مَرَّةً فِي الأُسْبُوعِأَمَّا الآنَ فَأَتَمَرَّنُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ
VerbWhat follows itExample
يُقَوِّيaccusative objectيُقَوِّي العَضَلَاتِ
يُحَسِّنُaccusative objectيُحَسِّنُ المِزَاجَ
يُقَلِّلُمِنْ + genitiveيُقَلِّلُ مِنَ التَّوَتُّرِ
يُسَاعِدُعَلَى + genitiveيُسَاعِدُ عَلَى النَّوْمِ
1
Two families of benefit verb

يُقَوِّي and يُحَسِّنُ take a direct object: يُقَوِّي العَضَلَاتِ. يُقَلِّلُ، يَزِيدُ and يُخَفِّفُ take مِنْ: يُقَلِّلُ مِنَ التَّوَتُّرِ. Sorting them into these two groups is the whole grammar of this lesson.

2
يَزِيدُ is Form I, not Form II

زَادَ / يَزِيدُ is a hollow Form I verb, so its past with a suffix is زِدْتُ. It looks like the Form II verbs around it but behaves differently.

يُقَوِّي التَّمْرِينُ مِنَ العَضَلَاتِ.

يُقَوِّي التَّمْرِينُ العَضَلَاتِ.

يُقَوِّي takes a direct object, not مِنْ.

يُقَلِّلُ المَشْيُ مِنْ خَطَرِ الأَمْرَاضِ.
