المَالُ — Money · Numeracy Mastery 04

Step into the souq! 🏮 From the spice markets of Cairo to the gold souqs of Dubai — and yes, the bazaars of Lahore too — shopping in the Arab world is a conversation, not a transaction. Today you learn to ask prices, react like a local (هَذَا غَالٍ!), hunt for a تَخْفِيض, count your change… and discover that money is the mirror image of age: everything you learned about سَنَة flips, because جُنَيْه is masculine.

بِكَمْ هَذَا؟how much is this?

Learning Objectives · أَهْدَافُ الدَّرْسِ

Choose your route and revision goal

This is a rich revision chapter rather than a one-period script. Begin with the Core route, then move into Develop and Stretch for discounts, exact change, currency agreement and longer shop interactions.

Core

  • Ask and understand prices.
  • Use common currency words.
  • Say prices from 1–99.

Develop

  • Use discounts and change.
  • Handle a complete shop dialogue.
  • Calculate totals from a price list.

Stretch

  • Explain the Age–Money gender mirror.
  • Use hundreds and decimal prices.
  • Repair complex agreement errors.

Objectives

  • Ask prices with بِكَمْ؟ and كَمْ ثَمَنُ…؟ and understand the answers Speaking
  • Use the main Arab currencies with correct number agreement — the mirror of the Age Ladder Writing
  • Handle a full shop transaction: paying, change, discounts, غَالٍ / رَخِيصٌ Listening
  • Perform the classic souq role-play, including polite haggling Reading

Success Criteria

  • 🟢 I can ask بِكَمْ هَذَا؟ and understand a price said in words.
  • 🟠 I can say any price 1–99 with the correct masculine forms — خَمْسَةُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ but عِشْرُونَ جُنَيْهًا.
  • 🟧 I can act the full souq dialogue — including هَذَا غَالٍ! عِنْدَكَ تَخْفِيضٌ؟ — and calculate البَاقِي in Arabic.
Why this matters in the exam The shopping scenario is a classic language-learning role-play: speaking tasks often ask you to request a price or say that something is too expensive. Listening tasks may include prices and change, while reading tasks often use adverts and discounts. Every phrase in this lesson strengthens practical communication and assessment readiness.
Part 1 · الجُزْءُ الأَوَّلُ

Asking the price — بِكَمْ هَذَا؟

Three little questions open every shop conversation in the Arab world. The star is بِكَمْ؟ — literally “for how much?” — the same كَمْ from كَمِ السَّاعَةُ؟ and كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟, now wearing the price-tag preposition بِـ.

Vocabulary The price questions — and their answers

كَمْ ثَمَنُ الكِتَابِ؟What is the price of the book?الثَّمَنُ = the price

الثَّمَنُ عَشَرَةُ رِيَالَاتٍ.The price is ten riyals.or state it plainly

✍️ Quiz 1 — May I Ask the Price? Score: 0/5

Answer independently first, then tap to check.

1. بِكَمْ هَذَا؟ means:
✔️ بِـ (for/at) + كَمْ (how much) — the price question. Third كَمْ of the course: time, age, now money!
2. الثَّمَنُ means:
✔️ الثَّمَنُ (or its synonym السِّعْرُ) = the price.
3. You are asking about حَقِيبَةٌ (a bag — feminine). You say:
✔️ هَذِهِ for feminine items — agreement never takes a day off in Arabic!
4. “It’s five pounds”:
✔️ Prices travel with بِـ — the sticky price-tag preposition.
5. كَمْ سِعْرُ القَامُوسِ؟ is asking about the dictionary’s:
✔️ السِّعْرُ = price. Two synonyms (ثَمَن / سِعْر) — examiners may use either, so know both.
Part 2 · الجُزْءُ الثَّانِي

Currencies — and the Mirror — العُمْلَاتُ

One Arabic language, many currencies. Learn the big four — then meet today’s twist: every one of them is masculine, so the Age Ladder you mastered last lesson flips into its perfect mirror image.

Vocabulary The currencies — العُمْلَاتُ

العُمْلَةُMeaningWhere you’ll meet it
جُنَيْهٌpoundEgypt — and جُنَيْهٌ إِسْتَرْلِينِيٌّ is the British pound £
رِيَالٌriyalSaudi Arabia, Qatar

دِينَارٌdinarKuwait, Jordan, Iraq
دُولَارٌdollareverywhere in exam texts!
نُقُودٌ / مَالٌmoneythe general words — فُلُوس in everyday speech
The Mirror 🪞 — سَنَة vs جُنَيْه سَنَةٌ is feminine; جُنَيْهٌ is masculine. Same ladder, opposite clothes:

Age (fem.): خَمْسُ سَنَوَاتٍ · خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً · خَمْسٌ وَعِشْرُونَ سَنَةً
Money (masc.): خَمْسَةُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ · خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ جُنَيْهًا · خَمْسَةٌ وَعِشْرُونَ جُنَيْهًا

The rungs never change — 1–2 special, 3–10 plural, 11–99 singular. Only the gender flips. If you know your age, you can already count money: just swap every form.

100مِائَةُ جُنَيْهٍمِائَةُ رِيَالٍ
The over-correction trap Students who master the Age Ladder sometimes write ✗ خَمْسُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ from habit. Stop and ask the Lesson 1 question: what is the singular, and what is its gender? جُنَيْهٌ is masculine → the number keeps its ة: خَمْسَةُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ. The rule was never “drop the ة” — it was always “flip”.

✍️ Quiz 2 — Through the Mirror Score: 0/6

👍 Flip or keep? Decide, then tap.

1. Which currency belongs to Saudi Arabia?
✔️ الرِّيَالُ السُّعُودِيُّ — you’ll spend it on your ʿUmrah trip, in shāʾ Allāh!
2. “Five pounds”:
✔️ جُنَيْه is masculine → number keeps ة + plural for 3–10. The middle option is the age habit sneaking in!
3. “Twenty riyals”:
✔️ Rung 3 is universal: 11–99 always take the singular — رِيَالًا, just like سَنَةً.
4. “Fifteen pounds”:
✔️ Masculine noun → masculine teen set: خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ. (Your age uses the feminine set — the mirror again!)
5. Why خَمْسَةُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ but خَمْسُ سَنَوَاتٍ؟
✔️ One rule, two nouns, opposite results — the flip in its purest form.
6. You are in Dubai. The taxi costs خَمْسُونَ دِرْهَمًا:
✔️ One word ending ـُونَ = a ten → 50. The 15/50 ear trap works on prices too!
Part 3 · الجُزْءُ الثَّالِثُ

Shopping words — مُفْرَدَاتُ التَّسَوُّقِ

Now the toolkit for the transaction itself: reacting to prices, paying, and — the sweetest word in any language — تَخْفِيضٌ.

Vocabulary Reacting, paying, saving

The strange tail of غَالٍ غَالٍ ends in just -in with no visible ي — one of Arabic’s “defective” adjectives. Before ال or with feminine it behaves normally: الغَالِي، غَالِيَةٌ. For now, memorise the chunk هَذَا غَالٍ! exactly as it is — it will earn role-play marks every single time.
Heritage link 🏮 — the art of the deal In a traditional souq, haggling (المُسَاوَمَةُ) is friendly theatre, not rudeness — the seller expects هَذَا غَالٍ! as the opening move. If your family shops in the bazaars of Lahore or Karachi, you already know the choreography: quote, gasp, counter-offer, smile, agree. Same game, different language!

✍️ Quiz 3 — Toolkit Check Score: 0/6

🖥️ Rapid-fire round — 10 seconds per question!

1. غَالٍ = ?
✔️ Expensive — with its famous short tail. Its opposite: رَخِيصٌ.
2. البَاقِي = ?
✔️ Literally “the remaining” — what comes back after you pay.
3. عِنْدَكَ تَخْفِيضٌ؟ means:
✔️ The haggler’s opening line — deploy after هَذَا غَالٍ! for full effect. 😄
4. أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ هَدِيَّةً means:
✔️ أَشْتَرِي = I buy (يَبِيعُ would be selling). A perfect role-play opener.
5. The shop window says تَنْزِيلَاتٌ — كُلُّ شَيْءٍ بِنِصْفِ الثَّمَنِ!
✔️ نِصْف strikes again — half an hour in Lesson 2, half the price today.
6. القَلَمُ أَرْخَصُ مِنَ الحَقِيبَةِ:
✔️ أَرْخَصُ مِنْ — the same أَفْعَلُ مِنْ pattern as أَكْبَرُ مِنْ in Lesson 3. Patterns pay dividends!
Part 4 · الجُزْءُ الرَّابِعُ

The souq dialogue — فِي السُّوقِ

🧕
الزَّبُونَةُ: عَفْوًا، مَعَ السَّلَامَةِ!You’re welcome — goodbye!
The five-move script 🎭 Every souq role-play is the same five moves: ① greet → ② ask the price (بِكَمْ؟) → ③ react & haggle (غَالٍ! تَخْفِيضٌ؟) → ④ agree & pay (سَآخُذُهُ، تَفَضَّلْ) → ⑤ change & farewell (البَاقِي، شُكْرًا). Memorise the skeleton and you can improvise any item, any price, any country.

✍️ Quiz 4 — Dialogue Detective Score: 0/5

👥 All answers hide in the dialogue above — no scrolling!

1. The bag’s original price was:
✔️ بِخَمْسِينَ جُنَيْهًا — one word ending ـِينَ = a ten → 50.
2. Which TWO words did the customer use to haggle?
✔️ The classic combo: declare it expensive, then request the discount. Textbook مُسَاوَمَة.
3. The final agreed price was:
✔️ The discount move worked: 50 → 40. Ten pounds saved with two Arabic words!
4. She paid 50 for a 40-pound bag. البَاقِي = ?
✔️ 50 − 40 = 10 → عَشَرَةُ جُنَيْهَاتٍ (Rung 2: 3–10 plural, masculine keeps ة).
5. تَفَضَّلْ appears twice. It means:
✔️ The all-purpose courtesy word — handing over money, goods, or simply welcoming someone in.

How money supports wider language skills — المَالُ فِي مَهَارَاتِ اللُّغَةِ

Three disguises: discount adverts in Reading, haggling dialogues in Listening, and the shop role-play in Speaking. All three, right now.

Task A · Reading 📖 The sale advert — مَكْتَبَةُ الأَمَلِ

  1. How much does a pen cost now?
  2. How much do you save on the bag?
  3. What does the dictionary cost now? (Careful — it needs a calculation!)
  4. Which item is the cheapest in the sale?
  5. Challenge: you buy a pen AND a notebook. What is the total, in Arabic words?
  1. 4 poundsبِأَرْبَعَةِ جُنَيْهَاتٍ.
  2. 15 pounds — from 60 down to 45. Spot the two clues: سِتِّينَ (a ten) vs خَمْسَةٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ (a compound).
  3. 50 poundsبِنِصْفِ الثَّمَنِ = half of 100. The answer is never written; you must compute it.
  4. The pen — 4 pounds. القَلَمُ أَرْخَصُ شَيْءٍ!
  5. 4 + 7 = 11 → أَحَدَ عَشَرَ جُنَيْهًا — Rung 3 singular, masculine teen. Full marks if you got the form right!

Task B · Listening 🎧 The haggle

Listen without looking first. Ask a partner or reader to say the dialogue twice, then note the original price, final price, amount paid and change.

🎧 Audio is coming soon.
Listening script الزَّبُونُ: بِكَمْ هَذَا القَمِيصُ؟

Check the maths: 100 − 70 = 30 ✓. Listening tasks may ask for the change without stating it — the numbers must add up, and now yours do.

Task C · Speaking & Writing ✍️ Your turn in the souq — دَوْرُكَ!

Use the shopping role-play card. One partner plays البَائِع; the other completes the five moves. Then write your version of the dialogue.

Role-play card (structured prompt) You are in a market in Cairo, buying a present for your sister.
① Greet the shopkeeper.  ② Ask the price of the bag.  ③ Say it is too expensive and ask for a discount.  ④ Accept the new price and pay.  ⑤ Thank him and say goodbye.
💡 Notice move ② does double duty — stating the purpose (هَدِيَّةً لِأُخْتِي) then asking the price. Adding one extra detail beyond the task is exactly what pushes role-plays into the top band.

First try counts. Bismillah!

1. The polite way to ask a price:
✔️ Three lessons, three كَمْ questions — time, age, price. You now own all three.
2. “Three riyals”:
✔️ رِيَال is masculine → the number keeps ة, and 3–10 take the plural.
3. 👂 You hear خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا. The price is:
✔️ Two words = a teen → 15. Fifty would be the single word خَمْسِينَ.
4. The item costs 35. You pay 50. البَاقِي = ?
✔️ 50 − 35 = 15 → masculine teen + singular جُنَيْهًا. Maths and grammar in one move.
5. Which sequence is the correct haggle?
✔️ Gasp, negotiate, then commit — never agree to buy before you’ve haggled!
6. الدَّفْتَرُ أَغْلَى مِنَ القَلَمِ means:
✔️ أَغْلَى مِنْ — the أَفْعَلُ مِنْ pattern, third appearance in the course.
7. Same number, two nouns: which pair is CORRECT?
✔️ The Mirror in one question: feminine سَنَة strips the ة; masculine جُنَيْه keeps it.
8. The sign says القَامُوسُ بِمِائَةِ جُنَيْهٍ — اليَوْمَ بِنِصْفِ الثَّمَنِ. Today it costs:
✔️ Half of 100 = 50. Reading + fraction + arithmetic — the exact recipe of a challenging reading question. 🎓
