If there is one question you can guarantee in your Speaking exam, it is كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟ — How old are you? Today you learn to answer it perfectly, talk about everyone in your family, and compare ages like a native speaker. Along the way you'll meet Arabic's famous Age Ladder: the word for “years” changes its form four times as people get older — and by the end, you'll know exactly why.
كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟how old are you?
عُمْرِيmy age is…
لِيI have… (years)
سَنَةًyear(s)
أَكْبَرُ مِنْolder than

Objectives
Ask and answer كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟ using both formulas: عُمْرِي… and لِي…Speaking
Climb the Age Ladder: the four forms of “year” — سَنَةٌ، سَنَتَانِ، سَنَوَاتٍ، سَنَةًWriting
Say the ages of everyone in your family, teens to seventies Listening
Compare ages with أَكْبَرُ مِنْ / أَصْغَرُ مِنْ and state the gap with بِـReading
Success Criteria
🟢 I can answer كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟ with my own age, fully correct.
🟠 I can choose the right rung of the ladder for any age 1–99 — سَنَوَاتٍ for 3–10, singular سَنَةً for 11+.
🟧 I can write أَخِي أَكْبَرُ مِنِّي بِسَنَتَيْنِ-style comparisons about my real family, with correct teen gender.
Why this matters in the exam
Age appears in every paper: Speaking (guaranteed personal questions), Writing (the “describe your family” task loves ages), Listening (people introduce themselves), and Reading (profiles and forms). The examiners’ favourite age trap: ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ (13) vs ثَلَاثُونَ (30) — one syllable apart in fast speech. You’ll train that ear today.
Part 1 · الجُزْءُ الأَوَّلُ
Asking and answering — كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟
The word عُمْرٌ means “age” (literally life-span — the same root as عُمْرَة and the name عُمَر). Attach a little ending and it becomes my age, your age, his age — then just add the number.
Formula 1 The عُمْر family
بِالعَرَبِيَّةِ
Meaning
Example
عُمْرِي
my age
عُمْرِي أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً — I am 14
عُمْرُكَ
your age (to a boy/man)
كَمْ عُمْرُكَ يَا أَحْمَدُ؟
عُمْرُكِ
your age (to a girl/woman)
كَمْ عُمْرُكِ يَا فَاطِمَةُ؟
عُمْرُهُ
his age
أَخِي عُمْرُهُ سَبْعُ سَنَوَاتٍ — my brother is 7
عُمْرُهَا
her age
أُخْتِي عُمْرُهَا عِشْرُونَ سَنَةً — my sister is 20
Formula 2 · The لِـ pattern — “I have … years”
Arabic can also say age the way French does (j’ai 16 ans): لِي سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً — literally “to me are sixteen years”. The family: لِي (I have) · لَكَ / لَكِ (you have) · لَهُ (he has) · لَهَا (she has). Both formulas earn full marks — عُمْرِي… is the safest everyday choice; recognise لِي… when you read or hear it.
Tiny letters, big differenceعُمْرُكَ (boy) vs عُمْرُكِ (girl) — only the final vowel changes. In the Speaking exam, listen for which one the examiner uses… and answer with عُمْرِي either way, so you can’t go wrong!
✍️ Quiz 1 — Ask Me Anything Score: 0/5
Think first, then tap to check.
1. كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟ means:
✔️ Literally “how much is your age?” — a high-frequency speaking question. (Last lesson’s كَمِ السَّاعَةُ؟ asked the time — same كَمْ, new noun.)
2. You are asking a girl her age. You say:
✔️ ـكِ with a kasrah = “your” for a female. (عُمْرُهَا would ask about HER — someone else!)
3. “My brother — his age is seven”:
✔️ عُمْرُهُ = his age. The middle option says “my brother, MY age is seven” — a classic mix-up!
4. لِي سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً means:
✔️ “To me are sixteen years” — Formula 2, just like French j’ai seize ans.
5. جَدَّتِي لَهَا سَبْعُونَ سَنَةً — who is seventy?
✔️ جَدَّتِي = my grandmother, and لَهَا = she has. Two feminine clues pointing the same way.

The Age Ladder — سَنَةٌ، سَنَتَانِ، سَنَوَاتٍ، سَنَةً
Here is the heart of the lesson. As a person gets older, the word for “year” climbs a ladder and changes form four times. It looks mysterious — until you realise it is simply Lesson 1’s golden rules, applied to one very important feminine noun: سَنَةٌ.
The Ladder Four rungs, every age from 1 to 100
Age
Rung
الصِّيغَةُ
Example
1
Rung 1
سَنَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
عُمْرُ أَخِي الصَّغِيرِ سَنَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ — the baby is 1
2
Rung 1
سَنَتَانِ
عُمْرُهَا سَنَتَانِ — she is 2 (the dual!)
3–10
Rung 2
…سَنَوَاتٍ
عُمْرُهُ خَمْسُ سَنَوَاتٍ — he is 5 (plural)
11–99
Rung 3
…سَنَةً
عُمْرِي خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً — I am 15 (back to singular!)
100
Rung 4
مِائَةُ سَنَةٍ
عَاشَ مِائَةَ سَنَةٍ — he lived 100 years
Why the flip on Rung 2?سَنَةٌ is feminine — so numbers 3–10 do the Lesson 1 gender flip and drop theة: ثَلَاثُ سَنَوَاتٍ، خَمْسُ سَنَوَاتٍ، عَشْرُ سَنَوَاتٍ. Same rule, familiar face.
The Rung 3 surprise
From 11 upwards, the noun snaps back to the singular: سَنَةً with a fatḥatayn. Students who write ✗ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَوَاتٍ lose the mark — “fifteen year”, not “fifteen years”, is correct Arabic!
The teens go feminine — your age lives here!
In Lesson 1 you learned the teens with masculine nouns: خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ. But سَنَةٌ is feminine, so ages 11–19 use the feminine teen set: ١١ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ · ١٢ اِثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ · ١٣ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ · ١٤ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ · ١٥ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ ١٦ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ · ١٧ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ · ١٨ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ · ١٩ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ
Notice the pattern: the unit drops itsة (the flip!) while عَشْرَةَgains one. Say your own age three times now — it’s the single most useful phrase in this course. 🎙️
✔️ The dual ending ـَانِ says “two” all by itself — no number word needed.
3. عُمْرُ أُخْتِي تِسْعُ سَنَوَاتٍ — my sister is:
✔️ تِسْعُ = 9 (Rung 2 → plural سَنَوَاتٍ). Nineteen would be تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً — Rung 3, singular.
4. “I am fifteen years old”:
✔️ Feminine teen (سَنَةٌ is feminine) + singular سَنَةً. The first option uses the masculine teen; the last breaks Rung 3.
5. After 11+, the word for “year” is:
✔️ The Rung 3 surprise: big numbers take a singular noun. “Fifteen year” is perfect Arabic.
6. Spot the ERROR: ✗ عُمْرِي أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَوَاتٍ
✔️ 14 is Rung 3 → أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً. The teen itself is correctly feminine — only the noun form is wrong.

Tens, compounds & the whole family — أَعْمَارُ العَائِلَةِ
Parents and grandparents live on Rung 3 too — tens and compounds always take singular سَنَةً. One new detail: in compound ages (25, 34, 45…), the unit does the gender flip, because it is still counting feminine سَنَة.

جَدَّتِي — my grandmother
70
عُمْرُهَا سَبْعُونَ سَنَةً
Compound ages — spot the flip
45 = خَمْسٌ وَأَرْبَعُونَ سَنَةً — the unit is خَمْسٌ (no ة!) because it counts feminine سَنَة. Compare Lesson 1’s خَمْسَةٌ وَأَرْبَعُونَ جُنَيْهًا (pounds — masculine). Same skeleton, different clothes.
Stretch 🟧 · The عَامًا alternative
Arabic has a second word for year: عَامٌ — and it is masculine. So the same age flips everything back: عُمْرِي خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً = عُمْرِي خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ عَامًا. One number system, perfectly consistent — the gender always follows the noun. Recognise عَامًا in reading; produce سَنَةً in writing.
The 13/30 ear trap 👂ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ (13) and ثَلَاثُونَ (30) — in fast Listening audio these blur together. The giveaway: teens have TWO words (unit + عَشْرَةَ); tens are ONE word ending ـُونَ. Same for 14/40, 15/50… Train it: a partner says one; hold up 1 finger (teen) or 3 fingers (ten). 🎙️
✍️ Quiz 3 — Family Numbers Score: 0/5
🖥️ Screen-share round — predict aloud first!
1. عُمْرُ أَخِي عِشْرُونَ سَنَةً — my brother is:
✔️ One word ending ـُونَ = a ten. Twelve would be two words: اِثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ.
2. “My father is 45”:
✔️ Unit flips for feminine سَنَة: خَمْسٌ without ة, and unit comes FIRST (Lesson 1’s “five-and-forty”).
3. 👂 You hear: عُمْرُ ابْنَتِي ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً. You write:
✔️ Two words = a teen: 13. Thirty would be the single word ثَلَاثُونَ.
4. جَدِّي عُمْرُهُ سَبْعُونَ عَامًا — grandad is:
✔️ سَبْعُونَ = 70, and عَامًا is the masculine twin of سَنَةً — same meaning, same rung.
5. Why is it اِثْنَتَانِ وَأَرْبَعُونَ سَنَةً (42) with اِثْنَتَانِ, not اِثْنَانِ؟
✔️ Beautiful spot: units 1–2 follow Rule 1 (copy the gender), units 3–9 follow Rule 2 (flip). The whole system in one number.
Part 4 · الجُزْءُ الرَّابِعُ
Older, younger & the same age — أَكْبَرُ وَأَصْغَرُ
In many of your families, birth order is practically a job title — the eldest brother, the youngest sister, everyone knows their place! Arabic gives you elegant tools for it: أَكْبَرُ مِنْ (older/bigger than) and أَصْغَرُ مِنْ (younger/smaller than) — the أَفْعَلُ pattern you will meet again and again in advanced Arabic.

The gap goes with بِـ
State the age difference with بِـ (“by”): أَبِي أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أُمِّي بِثَلَاثِ سَنَوَاتٍ — Dad is older than Mum by three years. Notice the ladder still applies after بِـ: بِسَنَةٍ، بِسَنَتَيْنِ، بِثَلَاثِ سَنَوَاتٍ.
Heritage link 🌟
Respect for elders is woven into both your deen and your languages — أَكْبَر is the same root you say in every prayer: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ, “Allah is greater (than everything)”. And Urdu speakers: baṛā bhāī (بڑا بھائی) is exactly الأَخُ الأَكْبَرُ. Your two heritage languages, agreeing about big brothers. 😄
✍️ Quiz 4 — Bigger, Smaller Score: 0/5
👥 Pair round: translate aloud before tapping.

✔️ From the root ك-ب-ر (big) — the same root as اللهُ أَكْبَرُ.
2. أُخْتِي أَصْغَرُ مِنِّي means:
✔️ مِنِّي = than ME (with the doubled ن). The sister is the subject doing the “being younger”.
3. “Older than me by two years”:
✔️ The dual again — بِسَنَتَيْنِ = by two years. (بِسَنَةٍ would be by ONE year.)
4. هُوَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْهَا بِخَمْسِ سَنَوَاتٍ:
✔️ مِنْهَا = than her, and بِخَمْسِ سَنَوَاتٍ — the ladder’s Rung 2 riding along after بِـ.
5. Your friend was also born in your birth year. You say:
✔️ “We are in the same age” — the friendly draw. 🤝

4. 👂 One word or two? خَمْسُونَ means:
✔️ One word ending ـُونَ = a ten. Fifteen is two words: خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ.
5. لَهَا سَنَتَانِ means:
✔️ Formula 2 (لَهَا = she has) + the dual = a two-year-old girl.
6. أُمِّي أَصْغَرُ مِنْ أَبِي بِثَلَاثِ سَنَوَاتٍ. If Dad is 45, Mum is:
✔️ Younger by three → 45 − 3 = 42. Reading + arithmetic, exam style.
7. Which is CORRECT for 30?
✔️ Rung 3: everything from 11–99 takes singular سَنَةً.
8. Why does the same person’s age use خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً but خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ عَامًا؟
