The past contains the prefix اِنْـ and the present commonly follows يَنْفَعِلُ. The initial alif is hamzat al-waṣl, not a written hamza above or below the alif.

Notice the relationship: كَسَرَ means to break something; اِنْكَسَرَ means to break or become broken. This resembles a passive or inchoative relationship, but Form VII is not the ordinary passive conjugation.

Look closely: Compare كَسَرَ الْوَلَدُ الْكَأْسَ with اِنْكَسَرَ الْكَأْسُ. The first describes someone breaking an object; the second focuses on what happened to the glass.

Misconception clinic
Do not equate Form VII with the grammatical passive. كُسِرَ and اِنْكَسَرَ are different forms, even when English uses similar translations.
اِنْكَسَرَ الْكَأْسُ. / كُسِرَ الْكَأْسُ.
The first is Form VII; the second is the passive of Form I. Both may be translated “the glass was broken” in an appropriate context.
