A

Why this matters

Learn the meaning before memorising the pattern.

Core

Recognise the pattern and understand the model verb in a sentence.

Develop

Use two or three verbs from this family in accurate past and present sentences.

Your goal: Form VI often expresses reciprocal or collective action. It helps describe cooperation, communication, shared activities and relationships.
1

Discover the pattern

Notice what changes and what stays connected to the root.

Root and pattern

Rootع-و-ن
Past patternتَفَاعَلَ
Present patternيَتَفَاعَلُ

Form VI adds ت before the root and a long ā after the first root consonant. The present commonly follows يَتَفَاعَلُ.

PastPresentMeaning
تَعَاوَنَيَتَعَاوَنُto cooperate
Notice the relationship: سَاعَدَ means to help; تَسَاعَدَ can mean to help one another. This illustrates a possible Form III–VI relationship, but meanings are not always predictable.
2

Learn the family

Read each pair aloud, then use the verbs in meaningful sentences.

PastPresentMeaning
تَشَارَكَيَتَشَارَكُto share or participate together
تَبَادَلَيَتَبَادَلُto exchange
تَفَاهَمَيَتَفَاهَمُto understand one another

يَتَعَاوَنُ الطُّلَّابُ فِي الْمَشْرُوعِ.

The students cooperate on the project.

تَبَادَلْنَا الْأَفْكَارَ فِي الِاجْتِمَاعِ.

We exchanged ideas at the meeting.

أَتَفَاهَمُ مَعَ صَدِيقَتِي بِسُهُولَةٍ.

I get along with my friend easily.

Look closely: Compare شَارَكَ with تَشَارَكَ and سَاعَدَ with تَسَاعَدَ. The added ت can be associated with shared action when the lexical meaning permits it.
3

Practise and apply

Move from recognising the pattern to using the language yourself.

Misconception clinic

The verb تَعَاوَنَ is already a Form VI verb. Do not add another ت to make it reciprocal, and do not assume that all Form VI verbs require a plural subject.

أَتَعَاوَنُ مَعَ صَدِيقِي.

I cooperate with my friend. A singular subject can participate in a reciprocal action.

Compare with a model response

Complete your own response first. This is one possible answer, not the only correct response.

We cooperate on the school project. Yesterday we exchanged ideas, then shared in writing the report. I get along with my classmates easily.

Stretch: explore a deeper connection

Compare مُشَارَكَةٌ and تَشَارُكٌ. Explain why the two verbal nouns are related but not interchangeable in every context.
