A

Why this matters لِمَاذَا نَسْتَعْمِلُ الْمَنْصُوبَ؟

The subjunctive lets learners express what they want, need, intend, refuse and act in order to achieve.

Core

Use أن and لن with common singular forms.

Develop

Apply nūn deletion to the five verbs and use purpose clauses.

Stretch

Contrast weak subjunctive and jussive forms and analyse endpoint structures.

Communication target: Build extended answers with intention, necessity, purpose and future negation.

1. I like to read

2. I train so that I improve

3. We will not be late

Regular and five-verb endings

Subjunctive changes are especially visible in dual and masculine/feminine addressee plural forms.

IndicativeSubjunctiveReason
يَكْتُبُأَنْ يَكْتُبَregular singular final vowel
تَكْتُبِينَأَنْ تَكْتُبِيfive-verb nūn drops
يَكْتُبَانِأَنْ يَكْتُبَاdual nūn drops
يَكْتُبُونَأَنْ يَكْتُبُواplural nūn drops
تَكْتُبْنَأَنْ تَكْتُبْنَfeminine plural remains built on sukūn
The “five verbs”: forms ending in ـانِ، ـونَ، ـينَ lose the nūn in the subjunctive. Do not remove the nūn from feminine plural تَكْتُبْنَ / يَكْتُبْنَ.

5️⃣ Five-Verb Check

0/4

1. I want you f. to study

2. We want them to write

3. I want the two students to arrive

4. I want the girls to write

3

Weak verbs in the subjunctive

Subjunctive and jussive weak forms must not be confused.

IndicativeSubjunctive modelNote
يَرْمِيلَنْ يَرْمِيَfinal y remains and takes visible fatḥa
يَدْعُولَنْ يَدْعُوَfinal wāw remains and takes visible fatḥa
يَسْعَىلَنْ يَسْعَىwritten form unchanged; the ending is estimated
يَرَىأُرِيدُ أَنْ أَرَىwritten alif maqṣūra remains
يَأْتِيلِكَيْ يَأْتِيَfinal y takes fatḥa
Do not copy the jussive rule into the subjunctive. Compare لَمْ يَرْمِ (jussive) with لَنْ يَرْمِيَ (subjunctive).

🌱 Weak Subjunctive Check

1. He will not throw

2. He will not call

3. I want to see

4. He studies so that he may come

Subjunctive clauses express purpose and intention

These structures are productive tools for extended answers across topic areas.

Want / intend

أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَعْمَلَ فِي الطِّبِّ.

Need / obligation

يَجِبُ أَنْ نَحْمِيَ الْبِيئَةَ.

Purpose

أَتَعَلَّمُ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ لِكَيْ أَتَوَاصَلَ مَعَ الْآخَرِينَ.

Endpoint

سَأَنْتَظِرُ حَتَّى تَنْتَهِيَ الْحِصَّةُ.

Range without decoration: Subjunctive clauses add purpose, intention and necessity. Use them because the meaning requires them, not merely to appear complex.

After أن

أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَدْرُسُ

أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَدْرُسَ

Regular singular takes final fatḥa in the fully supported model.

Five-verb nūn

أُرِيدُكِ أَنْ تَكْتُبِينَ

أُرِيدُكِ أَنْ تَكْتُبِي

The nūn drops.

Jussive versus subjunctive

لَنْ يَمْشِ

لَنْ يَمْشِيَ

The subjunctive retains final y; the jussive drops it.

Purpose structure

أَدْرُسُ لِكَيْ نَجَحْتُ

أَدْرُسُ لِكَيْ أَنْجَحَ

Purpose refers to the intended result, so use the subjunctive present.
