Core
Use basic إذا condition-result sentences.
Use إذا for real, expected and repeated conditions, and لو for hypothetical or counterfactual alternatives, with coherent result clauses.
Conditionals connect an action to its consequence and let learners give advice, explain outcomes and imagine alternatives.
Use basic إذا condition-result sentences.
Contrast likely إذا with hypothetical لو and use varied results.
Recognise formal إنْ and counterfactual patterns as Stretch.
Decide whether each condition is real or imagined.
1. Choose the likely/real condition.
2. Choose the hypothetical condition.
3. Which often means “when” as well as “if”?
4. Complete: إِذَا وَصَلْتَ، ___ بِي.
5. Complete: لَوْ كُنْتُ غَنِيًّا، ___ حَوْلَ الْعَالَمِ.
6. Best learning goal?
The choice changes how the speaker presents the condition.
| Connector | Core meaning | Model | Communicative use |
|---|---|---|---|
| إِذَا | if / when; real, expected or repeated | إِذَا دَرَسْتَ، سَتَنْجَحُ. | advice, routines, likely outcomes |
| لَوْ | if; imagined, unlikely or contrary to fact | لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدِي وَقْتٌ، لَسَافَرْتُ. | dreams, hypotheses, regrets |
| إِنْ (Stretch) | if; formal open condition | إِنْ تَجْتَهِدْ تَنْجَحْ. | formal conditional pattern |
1. Expected weather result
2. Imagined ability
3. Routine result
4. Which is more hypothetical?
Use a small set of reliable condition-result frames.
إِذَا وَصَلْتَ، سَأَتَّصِلُ بِكَ.
The past form after إذا does not necessarily refer to past time.
إِذَا شَعَرْتُ بِالتَّعَبِ، أَنَامُ مُبَكِّرًا.
The past-form condition can introduce what regularly happens whenever the condition is met.
إِذَا احْتَجْتَ إِلَى مُسَاعَدَةٍ، فَاسْأَلْنِي.
إِذَا كَانَ الْجَوُّ جَمِيلًا، فَالرِّحْلَةُ مُمْتِعَةٌ.
1. Best “When you arrive, call me.”
2. Best routine
3. Best likely future
4. Role of فـ
Use لو to imagine alternatives, express wishes and reflect on unreal past possibilities.
| Hypothetical frame | Model | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| لَوْ + كَانَ | لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدِي مَالٌ، لَاشْتَرَيْتُ سَيَّارَةً. | If I had money, I would buy a car. |
| لَوْ + كُنْتُ | لَوْ كُنْتُ مُدِيرًا، لَغَيَّرْتُ الْقَوَاعِدَ. | If I were a manager… |
| لَوْ + past event | لَوْ دَرَسْتُ أَكْثَرَ، لَنَجَحْتُ. | If I had studied more, I would have succeeded. |
| لَوْلَا (Stretch) | لَوْلَا الْمَطَرُ، لَخَرَجْنَا. | If it were not for the rain… |
1. If I had time, I would read.
2. If I were a doctor…
3. Common result signal after لو
4. Which expresses regret/counterfactual past?
A conditional adds cause, consequence, advice, imagination or reflection to simple statements.
| Topic | Likely frame with إذا | Hypothetical frame with لو |
|---|---|---|
1. Best likely environmental outcome
2. Best dream job extension
3. Best advice result
4. Best counterfactual reflection
A useful correction explains the form, not only the answer.
✗ إِذَا وَصَلْتَ أَمْسِ، سَأَتَّصِلُ بِكَ غَدًا دون سياق
✓ إِذَا وَصَلْتَ غَدًا، فَاتَّصِلْ بِي
Keep the condition and result time relationship coherent.
✗ إِذَا سَوْفَ تَدْرُسُ، سَتَنْجَحُ
✓ إِذَا دَرَسْتَ، سَتَنْجَحُ
A compact standard frame uses past-form condition plus future result.
✗ لَوْ شَعَرْتُ بِالْجُوعِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ، لَأَكَلْتُ
✓ إِذَا شَعَرْتُ بِالْجُوعِ، آكُلُ
Routine/repeated relation uses إذا.
✗ لَوْ كُنْتُ غَنِيًّا، سَافَرْتُ حَوْلَ الْعَالَمِ
✓ لَوْ كُنْتُ غَنِيًّا، لَسَافَرْتُ حَوْلَ الْعَالَمِ
The lam clearly signals the hypothetical result.
Match connector, condition and result.
Choose إذا or لو and the matching result.
Grammar becomes useful when it helps you understand and communicate.
Read advice posts and distinguish likely conditions from imagined alternatives. Identify the result in each sentence.
Listen to eight condition-result pairs and decide whether the speaker expects the condition or is imagining it.
Answer a topic question, then add one إذا consequence and one لو hypothetical extension.
Repair conditional sentences with incoherent time frames, mixed connectors and missing result markers.
Write 120–140 words giving advice about study, health or the environment. Include three realistic إذا conditions and two hypothetical لو extensions.
Plan the verb changes as a timeline, root map or sentence flowchart. Label each form in Arabic.
Draw two columns headed “real/expected” and “imagined”. Draft each condition in the correct column before writing the final response.
Choose and build basic functional conditionals.
1. Likely condition connector
2. Hypothetical connector
3. When you arrive, call me
4. If I had time…
5. If I were a doctor…
6. Likely result
7. Hypothetical result signal
8. Routine condition
9. Counterfactual
10. Main goal
Return in 3–7 days and repeat the final check without reviewing first. Retrieval, not recognition alone, builds secure verb control.
