Core
Use ما with past and لا with present.
Choose accurately among ما، لم، لا and لن, control the jussive after لم and distinguish present statements from negative commands.
Arabic negation is precise: different particles connect non-occurrence to past, present, future or prohibition.
Use ما with past and لا with present.
Use لم with the jussive and لن with the subjunctive.
Control five-verb and weak-verb mood changes and distinguish statement from prohibition.
Choose the negative system that fits each meaning.
1. Choose “I did not travel” with a perfect verb.
2. Choose another standard “I did not travel”.
3. Choose “I do not travel every week”.
4. Choose “They did not write” with لم.
5. Choose “I did not see”.
6. Which particle is for future negation?
Time frame determines the particle and often the verb mood.
| Structure | Model | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| مَا + past | مَا ذَهَبْتُ. | Negates a completed past action directly. |
| لَمْ + jussive present | لَمْ أَذْهَبْ. | Also means “I did not go”; the following form is morphologically present/jussive. |
| لَا + indicative present | لَا أَذْهَبُ عَادَةً. | Negates a habit, general action or current intention according to context. |
| لَنْ + subjunctive present | لَنْ أَذْهَبَ غَدًا. | Negates future action. |
1. Completed past action
2. Past negative with jussive
3. Present habit
4. Future negative
The two structures share a past meaning but use different verb forms.
مَا زُرْنَا الْمَتْحَفَ أَمْسِ.
The past verb keeps its normal conjugation.
لَمْ نَزُرِ الْمَتْحَفَ أَمْسِ.
The form after لم is jussive but the meaning is past negative.
1. “She did not arrive” with ما
2. “She did not arrive” with لم
3. “They did not travel” with لم
4. “You f. did not write” with لم
Use لا for present habits, general facts and contextually current non-actions.
| Use | Model | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| habitual non-action | لَا أَشْرَبُ الْقَهْوَةَ. | I do not drink coffee. |
| current refusal/intention from context | لَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ الآنَ. | I do not want to go now. |
| general fact | لَا تَطِيرُ الْأَسْمَاكُ. | Fish do not fly. |
| not a prohibition | هُوَ لَا يَكْتُبُ. | Statement about him, not a command. |
1. Statement: “He does not play.”
2. Command: “Do not play!”
3. General fact negative
4. Present feminine subject
Regular, five-verb and weak forms respond differently.
| Positive | After لَمْ | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| يَكْتُبُ | لَمْ يَكْتُبْ | final ḍamma → sukūn |
| يَكْتُبُونَ | لَمْ يَكْتُبُوا | nūn drops |
| تَكْتُبِينَ | لَمْ تَكْتُبِي | nūn drops |
| يَمْشِي | لَمْ يَمْشِ | final weak letter shortens/drops |
| يَدْعُو | لَمْ يَدْعُ | final weak letter shortens/drops |
| يَرَى | لَمْ يَرَ | final alif maqṣūra drops in the jussive form |
1. “He did not walk”
2. “He did not call”
3. “He did not see”
4. “They did not come” with يأتي
A useful correction explains the form, not only the answer.
✗ لَا ذَهَبْتُ أَمْسِ
✓ مَا ذَهَبْتُ أَمْسِ
Use ما with a past verb, or لم + jussive.
✗ لَمْ أَذْهَبُ
✓ لَمْ أَذْهَبْ
The following verb is jussive.
✗ لَمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
✓ لَمْ يَكْتُبُوا
The nūn drops.
✗ هُوَ لَا يَكْتُبْ
✓ هُوَ لَا يَكْتُبُ
A present negative statement remains indicative; sukūn would suggest a prohibition context.

Select the structure that matches the intended time.
Grammar becomes useful when it helps you understand and communicate.
Read a diary and classify every negative sentence by time frame and particle. Explain why each verb form follows.
Listen for minimal contrasts such as لم يكتبْ / لا يكتبُ / لن يكتبَ and identify the intended time.
Answer four questions using a different negative system each time: past action, past with لم, current habit and future plan.
Repair a mixed-time paragraph containing wrong particles, missing jussive changes and confusion between statements and prohibitions.
Write a 120–140-word reflection comparing what you did not do last week, what you do not usually do, and what you will not do next week.
Plan the verb changes as a timeline, root map or sentence flowchart. Label each form in Arabic.
Create four headings—past with ما, past with لم, present with لا, future with لن—and place each sentence under the correct heading before combining them.
Select the correct particle and verb form.
