A

Why this matters لِمَاذَا تَتَغَيَّرُ الْأَفْعَالُ الْمُعْتَلَّةُ؟

Weak and doubled roots remain connected to one meaning, but their visible stems adapt to pronunciation and suffixes.

Core

Produce core forms such as قُلْتُ، زُرْنَا، مَرَرْتُ and مَشَيْتُ.

Develop

Explain when a long vowel shortens or a shadda opens.

Stretch

Compare initial-weak and final-weak families without overgeneralising.

Communication target: Use weak verbs accurately in a connected account rather than only in tables.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Choose the correct “I said”.

2. Choose “we visited”.

3. Choose “I passed”.

4. Choose “I walked”.

5. Choose the present of وَصَلَ.

6. Best principle?

1

Hollow verbs: the middle changes shape

The middle weak radical may surface as a long vowel or as a short vowel, depending on the attached ending.

Hollow pairPast basePast with suffixPresent
ق-و-لقَالَقُلْتُ / قُلْنَايَقُولُ
ز-و-رزَارَزُرْتُ / زُرْنَايَزُورُ
ق-و-مقَامَقُمْتُ / قُمْنَايَقُومُ
Two stem shapes: the long vowel appears in forms such as قَالَ، قَالَتْ، قَالُوا. It shortens in forms whose suffix begins with a consonant: قُلْتُ، قُلْنَا، قُلْتُمْ.
هُوَ قَالَ الْحَقَّ.
نَحْنُ قُلْنَا الْحَقَّ.

🕳️ Hollow Verb Check

0/4

1. “You (m.) said”

2. “They visited”

3. “We stood”

4. Present “I say”

2

Doubled verbs: merge and separate

The shadda remains in some forms and opens into two consonants in others.

Base formWith vowel-beginning endingWith consonant-beginning endingPresent
مَرَّمَرَّتْ / مَرُّوامَرَرْتُ / مَرَرْنَايَمُرُّ
رَدَّرَدَّتْ / رَدُّوارَدَدْتُ / رَدَدْنَايَرُدُّ
أَحَبَّأَحَبَّتْ / أَحَبُّواأَحْبَبْتُ / أَحْبَبْنَايُحِبُّ
Why the letters separate: a shadda represents two consonants. Before a consonant-initial suffix, Arabic reveals both consonants: مَرَرْتُ, not مَرَّتُ.

➿ Doubled Verb Check

0/4

1. “I returned/replied” from رَدَّ

2. “She passed”

3. “We loved”

4. Present “he passes”

3

Initial and final weak verbs

A weak radical at the edge of the root can drop, return or change its written form.

TypePast / presentKey changeUseful forms
Initial weakوَصَلَ / يَصِلُInitial و drops in many common Form I present verbsوَصَلْتُ، نَصِلُ
Final ي-familyمَشَى / يَمْشِيى becomes ي before past suffixesمَشَيْتُ، مَشَيْنَا
Final و-familyدَعَا / يَدْعُوا returns as و before suffixesدَعَوْتُ، دَعَوْنَا
Final ي-familyرَمَى / يَرْمِيى becomes ي before suffixesرَمَيْتُ، رَمَيْنَا
Do not turn the rule into guessing. Some initial-wāw verbs keep the weak letter in other patterns. Learn the actual past/present pair used in your vocabulary.

Short oral chains make the alternations automatic without hiding the reasons.

Long with vowel-led endings; short before consonant-led endings.

Doubled memory line

مَرَّ — مَرَّتْ — مَرُّوا — مَرَرْتُ — مَرَرْنَا

Shadda opens before consonant-led suffixes.

Final weak memory line

Weak-verb misconception clinic

A useful correction explains the form, not only the answer.

Hollow past

أَنَا قَالْتُ

أَنَا قُلْتُ

The middle long vowel shortens before ـتُ.

Doubled past

نَحْنُ مَرَّنَا

نَحْنُ مَرَرْنَا

The two ر consonants separate before ـنا.

Final weak past

أَنَا مَشَتُ

أَنَا مَشَيْتُ

The ى becomes ي before the suffix.

Initial weak present

هُوَ يَوْصَلُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ

هُوَ يَصِلُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ

The common pair is وَصَلَ / يَصِلُ; do not preserve و by guesswork.

📖 Reading workshop

Read a journey blog and highlight every hollow, doubled, initial-weak and final-weak verb. Reconstruct the dictionary pair for each.

🎧 Listening workshop

Listen to a short group story. Each time the speaker changes from “I” to “we” or “they”, record the new verb form.

🗣️ Speaking workshop

Retell a past journey using قَالَ، زَارَ، مَرَّ، مَشَى and وَصَلَ. Then retell it with a different subject.

🛠️ Editing workshop

Correct eight weak-verb forms. For each correction, name whether the issue is shortening, shadda separation, weak-letter return or initial-letter loss.

✍️ Integrated production task

Write a 100–120-word account of a visit or journey. Use at least six weak or doubled verbs and include singular and plural subjects.

Model: أَمْسِ زُرْنَا مَدِينَةً قَرِيبَةً. قُلْنَا إِنَّنَا سَنَمْشِي إِلَى الْمَتْحَفِ، وَلَكِنَّنَا مَرَرْنَا بِسُوقٍ جَمِيلٍ أَوَّلًا.
Success checklist: Include two hollow verbs, one doubled verb, two final-weak forms and one initial-weak present or past pair.
