A

Why this matters لِمَاذَا نَدْرُسُ بِنْيَةَ الْفِعْلِ؟

Arabic verbs are compact information systems. Recognising their layers makes reading faster and production more accurate.

Core

Identify roots, past/present forms and the acting person.

Develop

Classify sound, initial-weak, hollow, final-weak and doubled verbs.

Stretch

Explain why a visible form changes while the root meaning remains connected.

Communication target: Given a verb in context, identify its family, person and time frame.
B

Diagnostic start

Try the system before the explanation.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Which item is a verb?

2. What is the root of كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ?

3. Which pair should be learned together?

4. Which verb is hollow?

5. Which verb is doubled?

6. Best learning principle?

1

The five layers inside a verb

Start by seeing the system rather than memorising disconnected endings.

LayerQuestionExample
RootWhat core consonants carry the main meaning?ك-ت-ب
Pattern/stemHow is the root shaped?كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ
Tense/aspectIs the action completed or ongoing/habitual?كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ
PersonWho performs the action?كَتَبْتُ / كَتَبْنَا
ContextWhat completes the meaning?كَتَبْتُ رِسَالَةً.
Key idea: Arabic verbs package several pieces of information into one word. كَتَبْنَا already tells us “we wrote”.

🧩 Root and Pattern Check

0/4

1. Choose the root of دَرَسَ / يَدْرُسُ.

2. Which form means “we wrote”?

3. Which pair shares one root?

4. Why learn the present with the past?

2

A map of sound and weak verb families

The labels help you predict what may change, but they do not replace learning actual forms.

FamilyArabic termSignalExamples
SoundالسَّالِمُNo weak radical and no doubled final pairكَتَبَ، دَرَسَ
Initial weakالْمِثَالُو or ي is the first radicalوَصَلَ / يَصِلُ
Hollowالْأَجْوَفُو or ي is the middle radicalقَالَ، زَارَ، قَامَ
Final weakالنَّاقِصُو or ي is the final radicalدَعَا، مَشَى، رَمَى
DoubledالْمُضَعَّفُSecond and third radicals matchمَرَّ، رَدَّ
Do not guess from spelling alone. Learn a high-frequency verb as a pair: قَالَ / يَقُولُ, زَارَ / يَزُورُ, مَشَى / يَمْشِي.

🔬 Verb Family Check

0/4

1. Classify زَارَ.

2. Classify مَشَى.

3. Classify وَصَلَ / يَصِلُ.

4. What does the shadda in مَرَّ represent?

3

Person, number and gender

A correct verb must match who performs the action.

PronounPast with كَتَبَPresent with يَكْتُبُ
أَنَاكَتَبْتُأَكْتُبُ
أَنْتَكَتَبْتَتَكْتُبُ
هُوَكَتَبَيَكْتُبُ
هِيَكَتَبَتْتَكْتُبُ
نَحْنُكَتَبْنَانَكْتُبُ

Past tense usually identifies the person mainly through suffixes. Present tense uses the prefix family أ، ت، ي، ن and, for several persons, additional suffixes.

أَنَا كَتَبْتُ أَمْسِ.
أَنَا أَكْتُبُ الآنَ.

👤 Person Check

0/4

1. Choose “I write”.

2. Choose “she wrote”.

3. Choose “we study”.

4. Which form can stand without a separate pronoun?

4

How to learn verbs efficiently

Strong retrieval stores connected forms and meaningful use.

Learn as a four-part entry

قَالَ / يَقُولُ / قَوْلٌ / قُلْ

past · present · verbal noun · useful command, where appropriate

Learn with a collocation

قَالَ الْحَقِيقَةَ، زَارَ الْمُتْحَفَ، مَرَّ بِالسُّوقِ

The surrounding words protect natural usage and prepositions.

Scope: This lesson maps the territory. Lesson 2 teaches the actual shape changes in hollow, doubled, initial-weak and final-weak verbs.

🧠 Learning Strategy Check

0/4

1. Best notebook entry for “to visit”?

2. Which statement is safe?

3. What should you check first in a sentence?

4. What should happen after explanation?

!

Foundation misconception clinic

A useful correction explains the form, not only the answer.

The weak letter is not “extra”

قَالَ ← الجذر ق-ل

قَالَ ← الجذر ق-و-ل

The و is a root radical even when it is not visible as و in the past surface form.

A shadda counts twice

الجذر م-ر

الجذر م-ر-ر

مَرَّ contains two root occurrences of ر.

Present is not simply “add ي”

ي + كَتَبَ = يَكَتَبَ

كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ

The stem vowels may change and must be learned.

One form is not a full verb entry

قَالَ فقط

قَالَ / يَقُولُ / قَوْلٌ

Connected learning prepares later tense and morphology work.

Apply the grammar across skills

Grammar becomes useful when it helps you understand and communicate.

📖 Reading workshop

Read a short daily-routine paragraph and circle all verbs. Sort them by past/present and by sound/weak/doubled family.

🎧 Listening workshop

A partner reads eight sentences. Record only the verb and identify who acts and whether the action is completed or ongoing.

🗣️ Speaking workshop

Give a 45-second answer about what you usually do and what you did yesterday. Use at least four different verbs.

🛠️ Editing workshop

Repair a paragraph containing one wrong person ending, one tense mismatch, one guessed weak-verb form and one missing preposition.

✍️ Integrated production task

Write 80–100 words introducing your daily routine and one past experience. Underline five verbs and annotate each with its root, time frame and subject.

Model: أَسْتَيْقِظُ مُبَكِّرًا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ، وَأَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ. أَمْسِ زُرْتُ الْمَكْتَبَةَ وَقَرَأْتُ كِتَابًا.
Success checklist: Use at least one sound verb, one hollow or weak verb, two different persons and two time frames.
