The verb رَأَى / يَرَى

This essential verb shifts visibly between past and present and preserves a written hamza in several past forms.

Memorise intelligently

Small paradigms and recurring sentence frames are more durable than long unconnected lists.

Mini-paradigm method

Say five forms in one rhythm:

رَأَى — رَأَتْ — رَأَيْتُ — يَرَى — أَرَى

Sentence-frame method

أَرَى ... / رَأَيْتُ ... / سَأَرَى ...

Change the time expression and object, not only the isolated verb.

Contrast similar meanings

جَاءَ / أَتَى، يَجِيءُ / يَأْتِي

Recognise both; choose one accurately for production.

Seeing

Keep the hamza and the full رَأَيْـ stem.

Coming

أَنَا جَاءْتُ مُبَكِّرًا

أَنَا جِئْتُ مُبَكِّرًا

The first-person past is جِئْتُ.

Taking

أَنَا أَأْخُذُ الْحَافِلَةَ

أَنَا آخُذُ الْحَافِلَةَ

Use madda in the first-person present.

Wanting

أَنَا أَرَادْتُ أَنْ أَدْرُسَ

أَنَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَدْرُسَ

The hollow stem shortens before ـتُ.
