Polite ordering with أُرِيدُ and price questions

الطَّلَبُ المُهَذَّبُ وَالسُّؤَالُ عَنِ السِّعْرِ

The lesson-plan grammar focus is a complete transactional frame: make a polite request, distinguish the form addressed to a man or woman, and ask the price accurately.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

أُرِيدُ حَسَاءَ العَدَسِ وَسَلَطَةً، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.
I would like lentil soup and a salad, please.

Use أُرِيدُ + item and finish with politeness.

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ طَعَامٌ نَبَاتِيٌّ؟
Do you have vegetarian food?

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ checks availability.

مَاءٌ عَادِيٌّ، مِنْ فَضْلِكِ.
Still water, please.

Short transactional replies can still be complete and polite.

الحِسَابُ، لَوْ سَمَحْتَ.
The bill, please.

Use a polite attention phrase to close the transaction.

يَطْلُبُ الزَّبُونُ الحَسَاءَ، وَتَطْلُبُ الزَّبُونَةُ السَّلَطَةَ.
The male customer orders soup, and the female customer orders salad.

The verb changes with the person being described.

1

Order an item politely

أُرِيدُ + شَيْئًا، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ / مِنْ فَضْلِكِ

The requested item follows أُرِيدُ. Use مِنْ فَضْلِكَ to a man and مِنْ فَضْلِكِ to a woman.

أُرِيدُ شَايًا، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.أُرِيدُ سَلَطَةً، مِنْ فَضْلِكِ.
2

Ask whether something is available

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ...؟

This polite business form asks whether the café or restaurant has an item.

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ طَعَامٌ نَبَاتِيٌّ؟هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ عَصِيرُ البُرْتُقَالِ؟
3

Ask the price

كَمْ سِعْرُ...؟ / كَمْ ثَمَنُ...؟

Use an idāfa phrase: “the price of the item”.

كَمْ سِعْرُ الحَسَاءِ؟كَمْ ثَمَنُ الوَجْبَةِ؟
4

Close the exchange

الحِسَابُ، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ. · شُكْرًا.

A complete transaction includes a polite closing.

الحِسَابُ، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.شُكْرًا جَزِيلًا.
PurposeTo a manTo a woman
pleaseمِنْ فَضْلِكَمِنْ فَضْلِكِ
I would likeأُرِيدُ...أُرِيدُ...
the billالحِسَابُ، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.الحِسَابُ، مِنْ فَضْلِكِ.
1

Transactional speaking rewards successful communication. Listen to the whole question, answer the detail asked, and add one polite expression.

2

أُرِيدُ is direct but polite when accompanied by مِنْ فَضْلِكَ / مِنْ فَضْلِكِ. أَعْطِنِي “give me” can sound too abrupt for this beginner restaurant context.

Accuracy repair workshop

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

أَعْطِنِي شَايًا.

أُرِيدُ شَايًا، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.

The corrected form is more suitable for a polite restaurant exchange.

أُرِيدُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ سَلَطَةٌ.

أُرِيدُ سَلَطَةً، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.

The requested item is the direct object and should be accusative.

هَلْ عِنْدَكَ طَعَامٌ نَبَاتِيٌّ؟

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ طَعَامٌ نَبَاتِيٌّ؟

عِنْدَكُمْ is a conventional way to ask a business whether it has something.
