Explain · notice · apply

Hearing tense, attribution and qualification

تَمْيِيزُ الزَّمَنِ وَالمُتَحَدِّثِ وَالتَّحَفُّظِ

Three things to catch at speed: which tense the verb carries, which speaker said it, and whether the claim was qualified.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

كَانَ يَحْتَفِلُ كُلَّ سَنَةٍ
What to notice

A past habit, not a single event.

فِي بَعْضِ العَائِلَاتِ
What to notice

The claim is narrowed to some families.

سَنَحْتَفِلُ العَامَ القَادِمَ
What to notice

The سَـ is short but decisive.

1

Tense from the verb shape

suffix = past · prefix = present · سَـ = future

The topic does not tell you the tense; the word shape does.

احْتَفَلْنَا — pastنَحْتَفِلُ — presentسَنَحْتَفِلُ — future
2

Past habit versus single event

كَانَ + present vs a single past verb

كَانَ يَحْتَفِلُ means used to celebrate; احْتَفَلَ means celebrated once.

كَانَ يَحْتَفِلُ كُلَّ سَنَةٍاحْتَفَلَ العَامَ المَاضِيَ
3

Qualified claims

أَحْيَانًا / لَيْسَ دَائِمًا / فِي بَعْضِ

A qualifier narrows the claim. Any option that widens it back to everyone is wrong.

فِي بَعْضِ العَائِلَاتِ تُزَيَّنُ البُيُوتُلَيْسَ دَائِمًا يَتَشَابَهُ الاحْتِفَالُ
4

Attribution in a dialogue

Speaker A / Speaker B / both

Note each claim against its speaker as you listen; decide only afterwards.

قَالَتْ نُورُ إِنَّهَا تَحْتَفِظُ بِلُغَتِهَاقَالَ سَامِي إِنَّهُ يَتَكَيَّفُ بِسُرْعَةٍ

1
A hedge changes the answer

If a speaker says فِي بَعْضِ العَائِلَاتِ or لَيْسَ دَائِمًا, an option claiming that everyone does it is wrong. Examiners build distractors from exactly this difference.

2
Track the speaker as well as the fact

In a two-person text, note who says what as you listen. A distractor often reports something true, but attributes it to the wrong speaker.

Choose the form for a reason

Every answer checks a stated rule, change or agreement decision.

Combinatorial builder studio

Build accurate three-tense reports that preserve the speaker's qualification.

This guided builder accepts 27 accurate combinations. Build 3 different sentences, changing one meaningful chunk each time. Compare the grammar and meaning before moving to the independent tasks.

Hearing فِي بَعْضِ العَائِلَاتِ and choosing “all families”.

Choosing “some families”.

A hedge narrows the claim and rules out the universal option.

Hearing كَانَ يَحْتَفِلُ and answering “he celebrates now”.

Answering “he used to celebrate”.

كَانَ places the habit in the past.

Attributing Nūr's statement to Sami.

Noting each claim against its speaker while listening.

Distractors often move a true fact to the wrong speaker.
