Objectives and visible success

Today you will

  • Produce accurate past-tense suffixes under conversational pressure.
  • Avoid the common strategy of substituting the present tense for the past.
  • Move between past, present and future within a single spoken answer.
  • Prepare independently for the D5 assessment across all four skills.

You can show success when…

Past-tense accuracy under pressure

دِقَّةُ الفِعْلِ المَاضِي تَحْتَ الضَّغْطِ

This lesson revisits the whole D5 system as a checklist you can apply while speaking: choose the person, choose the stem, attach the suffix, then add a reason.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

بَدَأْتُ فِي الطُّفُولَةِ
What to notice

The past question is mirrored by a past answer.

دَعْنِي أُفَكِّرُ
What to notice

A short Arabic filler protects your fluency mark.

لَعِبْتُ لِأَنَّهَا مُمْتِعَةٌ
What to notice

Action plus reason turns an answer into a response.

1

Answer in the tense of the question

past question → past answer

If the examiner uses a past verb or a past time phrase, mirror it. Answering in the present is the most common avoidance pattern.

كَيْفَ بَدَأْتَ؟ — بَدَأْتُ فِي الطُّفُولَةِمَاذَا فَعَلْتَ أَمْسِ؟ — لَعِبْتُ كُرَةَ السَّلَّةِ
2

Check the stem before the suffix

hollow / weak-final → adjust, then attach

قَالَ becomes قُلْـ, مَشَى becomes مَشَيْـ, and only then does the suffix go on.

زُرْتُ المَتْحَفَمَشَيْنَا طَوِيلًا
3

Extend every answer

action + reason or detail

A bare verb scores little. Add لِأَنَّ, a frequency phrase or a connector to turn an answer into a response.

لَعِبْتُ كُرَةَ السَّلَّةِ لِأَنَّهَا مُمْتِعَةٌتَدَرَّبْتُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ شَارَكْتُ فِي مُبَارَاةٍ
4

Move between tenses deliberately

past → present → future

A strong topic answer narrates, then describes the habit now, then states a plan.

بَدَأْتُ فِي الطُّفُولَةِ، وَأُمَارِسُهَا الآنَ، وَسَأَشْتَرِكُ فِي بُطُولَةٍ

1
The avoidance trap

Under pressure many candidates answer a past question in the present, because the present is easier to form. Examiners notice this immediately. If the question contains a past verb or a past time phrase, your answer must contain one too.

2
Buy time in Arabic, not in silence

دَعْنِي أُفَكِّرُ and سُؤَالٌ جَيِّدٌ give you a second to assemble the verb while still speaking Arabic. A short filler in the target language costs nothing; a long silence costs fluency marks.

Grammar laboratory

Choose the form for a reason

Every answer checks a stated rule, change or agreement decision.

8 questions
1The examiner asks: كَيْفَ بَدَأْتَ هٰذِهِ الهِوَايَةَ؟ Which answer is appropriate?

2The examiner asks: مَاذَا فَعَلْتِ أَمْسِ؟ Which answer is appropriate for a female candidate?

3Which answer avoids the past tense and should be repaired?

4Which phrase buys thinking time in Arabic?

5Which is the strongest extended answer?

6Which stem is correct before the suffix?

7Which repair phrase corrects a slip mid-sentence?

8Which answer shows deliberate tense variety?
