Explain · notice · apply

Hearing tense in connected speech

تَمْيِيزُ الزَّمَنِ فِي الكَلَامِ المُتَّصِلِ

Three things separate the tenses in speech: the prefix, the suffix and the time expression. Any one of them can decide an answer, and the distractors usually change only the tense.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

تَدَرَّبْتُ أَمْسِ
What to notice

No prefix, and the tense information is at the end.

أَتَدَرَّبُ عَادَةً
What to notice

A prefix plus عَادَةً signals a present habit.

سَأَتَدَرَّبُ غَدًا
What to notice

The سَـ is short but decisive.

1

Past is marked by a suffix

تَدَرَّبْتُ / تَدَرَّبَ / تَدَرَّبْنَا

There is no prefix. The information sits at the end of the word, so listen through to the final syllable.

تَدَرَّبْتُ أَمْسِتَدَرَّبْنَا الأُسْبُوعَ المَاضِيَ
2

Present is marked by a prefix

أَتَدَرَّبُ / يَتَدَرَّبُ / نَتَدَرَّبُ

The person is signalled at the start of the word. A present verb with عَادَةً or كُلَّ يَوْمٍ describes a habit.

أَتَدَرَّبُ عَادَةً مَسَاءًيَتَدَرَّبُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ
3

Future adds سَـ or سَوْفَ

سَأَتَدَرَّبُ / سَوْفَ نَتَدَرَّبُ

The future is the present with a marker in front. In fast speech the سَـ is short, so listen for it at the very start.

سَأُشَارِكُ غَدًاسَوْفَ نَحْضُرُ المُبَارَاةَ
4

Tense-only distractors

same vocabulary, different tense

A common wrong option repeats the words of the text but changes the time. Check the verb form before choosing.

فَازَ بِالبُطُولَةِ vs سَيَفُوزُ بِالبُطُولَةِتَدَرَّبَ أَمْسِ vs يَتَدَرَّبُ عَادَةً
TenseWhere the marker sitsExample
Pastsuffix at the endشَارَكْتُ
Presentprefix at the startأُشَارِكُ
Past habitكَانَ + presentكَانَ يُشَارِكُ
Futureسَـ or سَوْفَ in frontسَأُشَارِكُ
1
The ending carries the tense, not the topic

تَدَرَّبَ and يَتَدَرَّبُ describe the same activity in different times. In fast speech the difference is one prefix and one ending, so train your ear on those, not on the vocabulary around them.

2
Annotate the tense before you listen

Read each question and write P, N or F beside it for past, now or future. When the text plays, you are then listening for a specific verb form rather than for the topic in general.

Grammar laboratory

Choose the form for a reason

Every answer checks a stated rule, change or agreement decision.

5The text says فَازَ بِالبُطُولَةِ. Which option matches?

6The text says كَانَ يَتَدَرَّبُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ. What does it mean?

The guided builder develops flexible sentence construction. The three independent tasks then test different skills: grammatical transformation, meaning and coherence, and original sentence production.

This guided builder accepts 27 accurate combinations. Build 3 different sentences, changing one meaningful chunk each time. Compare the grammar and meaning before moving to the independent tasks.

Accuracy repair workshop

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

Hearing تَدَرَّبَ and answering “he trains”.

تَدَرَّبَ means “he trained”.

A verb with no prefix and a final fatḥa is past.

Hearing سَيَفُوزُ and answering “he won”.

سَيَفُوزُ means “he will win”.

سَـ marks the future.

Hearing كَانَ يَلْعَبُ and answering “he plays”.

كَانَ يَلْعَبُ means “he used to play”.

كَانَ places the habit in the past.
