Reading past-tense texts with evidence

قِرَاءَةُ النُّصُوصِ المَاضِيَةِ بِالدَّلِيلِ

Three moves make these texts manageable: identify the text type from the verbs, follow the sequence with the connectors, and prove each answer from the Arabic.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

فَازَتْ بِالمِيدَالِيَةِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِ
What to notice

A third-person past cluster points to a biography.

أَقَمْنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ
What to notice

A first-person past cluster points to a personal review.

فِي العَامِ المَاضِي انْتَقَلَ
What to notice

The time marker confirms the tense of the verb.

1

Third-person clusters

فَعَلَ / فَعَلَتْ / فَعَلُوا

A text built on third-person past verbs is usually about someone else: a biography, a report or a news item.

بَدَأَ مَسِيرَتَهُ مُبَكِّرًافَازَتْ بِالمِيدَالِيَةِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِ
2

First-person clusters

فَعَلْتُ / فَعَلْنَا

A text built on first-person past verbs is a personal account, a review or a diary.

حَجَزْتُ الفُنْدُقَ عَبْرَ الإِنْتِرْنِتْأَقَمْنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ
3

Sequence markers

فِي البِدَايَةِ … ثُمَّ … بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ … فِي النِّهَايَةِ

These fix the order of events. A question about what happened first or last is usually answered by locating one of them.

ثُمَّ انْتَقَلَ إِلَى فَرِيقٍ آخَرَبَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ اعْتَزَلَ اللَّعِبَ
4

Choosing the tense in a gap-fill

time marker → tense

Find the nearest time expression. A past marker requires a past verb; فِي المُسْتَقْبَلِ or غَدًا requires سَـ with a present verb.

فِي العَامِ المَاضِي انْتَقَلَ إِلَى نَادٍ جَدِيدٍفِي المُسْتَقْبَلِ سَيُدَرِّبُ الشَّبَابَ
Signal in the textWhat it tells youExample
1
Verb clusters name the text type

A run of فَعَلَ and فَعَلَتْ forms usually signals a biography or event report. A run of فَعَلْتُ and فَعَلْنَا signals a personal account or review. Reading the verb endings first tells you what kind of text you are in before you read for detail.

2
Time expressions confirm what the suffixes suggest

أَمْسِ، الأُسْبُوعَ المَاضِيَ and فِي العَامِ المَاضِي are the reading equivalent of the past suffix. When a gap-fill asks you to choose a verb, the nearest time expression is usually the deciding evidence.

Grammar laboratory

Choose the form for a reason

Every answer checks a stated rule, change or agreement decision.
