كَانَ, the past habit, and the narrative arc

كَانَ وَالعَادَةُ المَاضِيَةُ وَبِنَاءُ السَّرْدِ

Two structures build the story and one set of connectors shapes it. Watch the ending on the predicate of كَانَ, and keep the second verb in the present when you mean a past habit.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

كَانَ الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلًا
What to notice

Nominative subject, accusative predicate.

كَانَ يَلْعَبُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ
What to notice

كَانَ carries the past; the second verb stays present.

فَجْأَةً تَغَيَّرَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ
What to notice

فَجْأَةً opens the clause and marks the turn.

1

كَانَ with a description

كَانَ + nominative subject + accusative predicate

The predicate of كَانَ takes the accusative. This applies to adjectives and to nouns.

كَانَ الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلًاكَانَتِ المُبَارَاةُ صَعْبَةً
2

كَانَ with a present verb

كَانَ + present-tense verb

This expresses a repeated or ongoing past action. Both verbs agree with the same subject; only كَانَ carries the past.

كَانَ يَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ القَدَمِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍكَانَتْ تُشَاهِدُ التِّلْفَازَ كُلَّ مَسَاءٍ
3

كَانَ is a hollow verb

كَانَ → كُنْتُ / كُنَّا

Before a consonant suffix the long ā shortens to u, exactly as with قَالَ.

كُنْتُ سَعِيدًا فِي ذٰلِكَ اليَوْمِكُنَّا مُتَحَمِّسِينَ لِلْمُبَارَاةِ
4

The narrative arc

setting → events → turn → resolution

فِي البِدَايَةِ opens, ثُمَّ continues, فَجْأَةً or فِي تِلْكَ اللَّحْظَةِ marks the turn, and فِي النِّهَايَةِ or أَخِيرًا closes.

1
كَانَ changes the ending of what follows

The subject of كَانَ stays nominative, but its predicate becomes accusative: كَانَ الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلًا, كَانَتِ المُبَارَاةُ صَعْبَةً. This single ending is the most common accuracy marker in Arabic narrative writing.

2
Connectors carry the shape of the story

فِي البِدَايَةِ sets the scene, ثُمَّ moves it forward, فَجْأَةً marks the turn, and فِي النِّهَايَةِ resolves it. Place one at each stage and the reader can follow the arc without effort.

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

كَانَ الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلٌ.

كَانَ الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلًا.

The predicate of كَانَ must be accusative.

كَانَ لَعِبَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.

كَانَ يَلْعَبُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.

A past habit needs كَانَ plus a present verb, not two past verbs.

كَانْتُ سَعِيدًا.

كُنْتُ سَعِيدًا.

كَانَ is hollow, so the stem shortens to كُنْـ before the suffix.
