Plural suffixes and irregular stems

لَوَاحِقُ الجَمْعِ وَالجُذُورُ الشَّاذَّةُ

Three new suffixes complete the past-tense system. Then three families of irregular verb change their stem before those suffixes. Identify the family first, adjust the stem, then attach the ending.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

لَعِبْنَا مَعًا
What to notice

ـنَا marks a shared action; مَعًا is an adverbial accusative.

قُلْنَا الحَقِيقَةَ
What to notice

The long ā of قَالَ shortens to u before the consonant suffix.

رَأَيْنَا مَنْظَرًا جَمِيلًا
What to notice

The alif maqṣūra of رَأَى becomes yāʾ before ـنَا.

1

The three plural suffixes

نَحْنُ → ـنَا · أَنْتُمْ → ـتُمْ · هُمْ → ـُوا

The نَحْنُ and أَنْتُمْ suffixes begin with a consonant; the هُمْ suffix is a long ū written with a silent alif.

لَعِبْنَا مَعًالَعِبُوا فِي المَلْعَبِ
2

Hollow verbs

قَالَ → قُلْنَا · نَامَ → نِمْنَا

A verb whose middle letter is a long vowel shortens that vowel before a consonant suffix. The short vowel matches the verb's own family: u for قَالَ, i for نَامَ.

قُلْنَا الحَقِيقَةَنِمْنَا مُبَكِّرًا
3

Weak-final verbs

مَشَى → مَشَيْنَا · رَأَى → رَأَيْنَا

A verb ending in alif maqṣūra replaces it with yāʾ before a consonant suffix.

مَشَيْنَا عَلَى الشَّاطِئِرَأَيْنَا مَنْظَرًا جَمِيلًا
4

هُمْ with a weak-final verb

مَشَى → مَشَوْا · لَعِبَ → لَعِبُوا

With هُمْ a regular verb takes ـُوا. A weak-final verb loses its final vowel letter and takes ـَوْا instead.

لَعِبُوا مَعًامَشَوْا إِلَى البَيْتِ
PersonSuffixExample
نَحْنُـنَاذَهَبْنَا
أَنْتُمْـتُمْذَهَبْتُمْ
هُمْـُواذَهَبُوا
Hollow, نَحْنُshortened stem + ـنَاقُلْنَا
Weak-final, نَحْنُyāʾ stem + ـنَامَشَيْنَا
1
ـنَا turns your story into our story

Swapping لَعِبْتُ for لَعِبْنَا moves the account from one person to a group. Plural past tense is the language of team sport, family holidays and shared memories.

2
Irregular verbs are regular in their endings

The suffixes never change. What changes is the stem: قَالَ shortens to قُلْـ, and مَشَى takes a yāʾ to become مَشَيْـ. Learn the stem change once and the endings follow the usual pattern.

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

قَالْنَا الحَقِيقَةَ.

قُلْنَا الحَقِيقَةَ.

A hollow verb must shorten its middle vowel before a consonant suffix.

مَشَانَا عَلَى الشَّاطِئِ.

مَشَيْنَا عَلَى الشَّاطِئِ.

The final alif maqṣūra becomes yāʾ before ـنَا.

هُمْ لَعِبْنَا فِي المَلْعَبِ.

هُمْ لَعِبُوا فِي المَلْعَبِ.

هُمْ takes ـُوا, not the نَحْنُ suffix.
