Reading grammar in context: person, time and reference

تَتَبُّعُ الشَّخْصِ وَالوَقْتِ وَالمَرْجِعِ فِي القِرَاءَةِ

Grammar helps a reader identify who acts, when an event happens and how one sentence connects to the next. Track prefixes, suffixes, schedule verbs and contrast markers as evidence.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

حَسَبَ الجَدْوَلِ، يَبْدَأُ النَّادِي فِي الخَامِسَةِ وَالنِّصْفِ.
According to the schedule, the club begins at 5:30.

Match the event to the exact time.

تَعُودُ هُدَى مُبَكِّرًا، بَيْنَمَا يَعُودُ أَخُوهَا مُتَأَخِّرًا.
Huda returns early, while her brother returns late.

Track feminine and masculine verb prefixes.

أَمَّا يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ فَتَسْتَيْقِظُ فِي الثَّامِنَةِ.
As for Saturday, she wakes at eight.

Use the contrast frame to locate the weekend detail.

يَعُودُ الضَّمِيرُ «ـهَا» إِلَى مَرْيَمَ.
The suffix “her” refers to Maryam.

Explain reference with exact evidence.

1

Track the subject through the present-tense prefix

أَـ = أَنَا · تَـ = أَنْتَ / أَنْتِ / هِيَ · يَـ = هُوَ · نَـ = نَحْنُ

Use the prefix and any named subject to identify the person before selecting an answer.

تَعُودُ مَرْيَمُ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ.يَعُودُ أَخُوهَا فِي الخَامِسَةِ.
2

Track pronoun suffixes to the nearest logical noun

ـهُ · ـهَا · ـهُمْ · ذٰلِكَ

Ask which earlier noun matches the gender and meaning of the suffix or demonstrative.

يُحَضِّرُ حَقِيبَتَهُ. ← حَقِيبَةُ خَالِدٍتَكْتُبُ رُوتِينَهَا. ← رُوتِينُ مَرْيَمَ
3

Use time and frequency expressions as evidence

فِي + الوَقْتِ · مِنْ ... إِلَى ... · مَرَّاتٍ فِي الأُسْبُوعِ

Numbers are distractors unless they answer the exact question. Link every time or number to its event.

يَبْدَأُ الدَّرْسُ فِي الثَّامِنَةِ وَالنِّصْفِ.تَتَمَرَّنُ مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الأُسْبُوعِ.
4

Follow sequence and contrast markers

قَبْلَ أَنْ · بَعْدَ أَنْ · بَيْنَمَا · أَمَّا ... فَـ

These markers show order or difference and often change which detail answers the question.

تَدْرُسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ.أَمَّا يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ فَتَسْتَيْقِظُ مُتَأَخِّرًا.
Reading signalWhat it tells youExample question
تَـ / يَـwho performs the actionWho returns first?
مِنْ ... إِلَى ...start, finish or durationWhen does the activity end?
مَرَّتَيْنِ / دَائِمًاfrequencyHow often?
بَيْنَمَا / أَمَّاcomparison or contrastHow are the routines different?
1

A schedule is not read like a paragraph: first identify the row, column, person and day named in the question.

2

In connected prose, person prefixes and pronoun suffixes are evidence. They show who performs each action and what a later word refers to.
