الانْتِمَاءُ وَالتَّكَيُّفُ وَالمُقَارَنَةُ

Four verbs each with a fixed preposition, and two comparison systems that must not be mixed. Choose one comparative form and keep the noun after مِنْ genitive.

The four diaspora verbs

Each preposition is fixed and takes the genitive. يُوَازِنُ بَيْنَ is followed by two things joined with وَ.

The synthetic comparative

أَفْعَل + مِنْ + genitive

The أَفْعَل form is invariable and never takes the article in this structure.

The analytical comparative

أَكْثَرُ / أَقَلُّ + accusative noun + مِنْ

Use this when there is no أَفْعَل form available. The noun between is accusative.

بَيْنَمَا joins two contrasting clauses; the balanced pair holds two sides of one idea together.

Four verbs, four prepositions

يَنْتَمِي إِلَى، يَتَكَيَّفُ مَعَ، يَحْتَفِظُ بِـ، يُوَازِنُ بَيْنَ. Together they describe the whole arc of diaspora experience: where you belong, how you adjust, what you keep and how you hold both sides at once.

Do not double the comparative

Arabic has two ways to compare. Either the synthetic أَفْعَل form — أَكْبَرُ مِنْ — or the analytical أَكْثَرُ … مِنْ with a noun. Writing أَكْثَرُ أَكْبَرُ combines both and is wrong.

تَعِيشُ أُسْرَتِي هُنَا مُنْذُ سَنَوَاتٍ طَوِيلَةٍ، وَأَنَا مِنَ الجِيلِ الثَّانِي فِي الجَالِيَةِ العَرَبِيَّةِ. أَنْتَمِي إِلَى ثَقَافَتَيْنِ، وَأُوَازِنُ بَيْنَهُمَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ. فِي البَيْتِ نَتَحَدَّثُ العَرَبِيَّةَ، بَيْنَمَا أَدْرُسُ بِالإِنْجِلِيزِيَّةِ. تَحْتَفِظُ أُمِّي بِعَادَاتِهَا، وَقَدْ تَكَيَّفَتْ مَعَ الحَيَاةِ هُنَا بِسُرْعَةٍ. مَدِينَتُنَا أَصْغَرُ مِنَ القَاهِرَةِ، وَلٰكِنَّهَا أَكْثَرُ هُدُوءًا مِنْهَا. مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ أَشْعُرُ بِالحَنِينِ إِلَى بَلَدِ أُسْرَتِي، وَمِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ أُخْرَى أُحِبُّ حَيَاتِي هُنَا. وَتَجَارِبُ النَّاسِ مُخْتَلِفَةٌ، فَلَا تُوجَدُ قِصَّةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ تَصِفُ الجَمِيعَ.
