Cultural verbs and their prepositions

Each preposition is fixed, and the noun after it is genitive.

Contrast with بَيْنَمَا

clause + بَيْنَمَا + clause

بَيْنَمَا joins two full clauses that genuinely differ. It is not used for a simple list.

Each cultural verb keeps its own preposition

يَعْتَادُ عَلَى، يَتَمَسَّكُ بِـ، يَنْتَمِي إِلَى، يَتَكَيَّفُ مَعَ. Learn the verb and the preposition as one unit; swapping them is the most common error in this topic.

Describe what you observed, not what everyone does

Customs vary between countries, between regions and between families. Write فِي بَعْضِ العَائِلَاتِ or أَحْيَانًا rather than كُلُّ العَرَبِ. A sentence beginning “All Arabs…” is a generalisation, and it is almost always inaccurate.
