The cultural passive and tense choice

المَبْنِيُّ لِلْمَجْهُولِ فِي الوَصْفِ الثَّقَافِيِّ

One new structure and one choice: form the passive by changing the vowel pattern, and decide between present for the general custom and past for your own memory.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

يُزَيَّنُ الشَّارِعُ بِالفَوَانِيسِ
What to notice

Passive verb, nominative subject, بِـ for the means.

يَصُومُ المُسْلِمُونَ فِي رَمَضَانَ
What to notice

Present for a general custom; رَمَضَان is a diptote.

صُمْتُ لِأَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ
What to notice

صَامَ is hollow, so the stem becomes صُمْـ.

1

Forming the present passive

يُفَعِّلُ → يُفَعَّلُ

The prefix takes a ḍamma and the letter before the ending takes a fatḥa. No extra word is added.

يُزَيِّنُ ← يُزَيَّنُيُوَزِّعُ ← يُوَزَّعُ
2

The passive verb agrees with the thing affected

passive verb + nominative subject

What was the object becomes the subject and is nominative. The verb agrees with it in gender.

يُزَيَّنُ الشَّارِعُ بِالفَوَانِيسِتُتَبَادَلُ التَّهَانِي وَالهَدَايَا
3

Present for the general custom

يَصُومُ / يَتَصَدَّقُ / تُقَامُ

Use the present for what happens each year, and add a hedge where the custom is regional.

يَصُومُ المُسْلِمُونَ فِي رَمَضَانَفِي بَعْضِ البُلْدَانِ تُزَيَّنُ الشَّوَارِعُ
4

Past for personal experience

صُمْتُ / حَضَرْتُ / زُرْنَا

صَامَ is hollow, so the middle vowel shortens: صُمْتُ، صُمْنَا.

صُمْتُ لِأَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ عِنْدَمَا كُنْتُ فِي السَّابِعَةِزُرْنَا الأَقَارِبَ فِي أَوَّلِ أَيَّامِ العِيدِ

يَتَبَادَلُتُتَبَادَلُتُتَبَادَلُ التَّهَانِي
يُقِيمُتُقَامُتُقَامُ صَلَاةُ العِيدِ صَبَاحًا
1
The passive changes the vowels, not the letters

يُزَيِّنُ becomes يُزَيَّنُ, and يُوَزِّعُ becomes تُوَزَّعُ. Arabic marks the passive inside the word, so the doer disappears entirely. This is why cultural descriptions use it so often: the custom matters more than who performs it.

2
General custom in the present, personal memory in the past

يَصُومُ المُسْلِمُونَ فِي رَمَضَانَ describes what generally happens. صُمْتُ لِأَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ عِنْدَمَا كُنْتُ فِي السَّابِعَةِ describes your own experience. Keep the two apart and your writing becomes much clearer.
