Formal statistics have their own verbs

يُعَدُّ … مِنْ places something in a category, يَبْلُغُ gives a figure, and يُمَثِّلُ states a proportion. These three carry almost every statistical sentence you will need in a formal text.

Words travel, and the route is often long

الجَبْر، الكِيمْيَاء، قَهْوَة، سُكَّر، صِفْر and قُطْن all reached other languages from or through Arabic, sometimes via Latin, Italian or Spanish. Say that a word reached another language; avoid claiming an exact path unless you have checked it.

تُعَدُّ العَرَبِيَّةُ مِنْ أَكْثَرِ اللُّغَاتِ انْتِشَارًا فِي العَالَمِ، وَهِيَ إِحْدَى لُغَاتِ الأُمَمِ المُتَّحِدَةِ الرَّسْمِيَّةِ. وَيَبْلُغُ عَدَدُ المُتَحَدِّثِينَ بِهَا مَلَايِينَ كَثِيرَةً فِي قَارَّاتٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ. وَقَدِ انْتَقَلَتْ كَلِمَاتٌ عَرَبِيَّةٌ إِلَى لُغَاتٍ أُخْرَى عَبْرَ التِّجَارَةِ وَالتَّرْجَمَةِ، مِثْلَ الجَبْرِ وَالكِيمْيَاءِ وَالقَهْوَةِ وَالسُّكَّرِ. وَلَيْسَ الطَّرِيقُ وَاضِحًا تَمَامًا فِي كُلِّ حَالَةٍ، وَلٰكِنَّ التَّأْثِيرَ ثَابِتٌ. أَتَعَلَّمُ العَرَبِيَّةَ لِأَنَّهَا تُثْرِي تَفْكِيرِي وَتُوَسِّعُ آفَاقِي، وَتُمَثِّلُ قِيمَةً مِهْنِيَّةً فِي التَّرْجَمَةِ وَالدِّبْلُومَاسِيَّةِ.
