Context and Distractors السِّيَاقُ وَالمُشَتِّتَاتُ

Use grammar, collocation, negatives, contrast and exact evidence to work out meaning and reject answers that sound plausible but are not fully supported.

🧠 Context clues⚠️ Distractors🔎 Evidence⏱️ 75–105 minutes
01

Orient

Your goal هَدَفُكَ

A distractor is not random. It often repeats a word from the text, gives a partly true statement or reports an idea that was later corrected. Your job is to choose the option supported by the complete meaning.

🎯

Core

Notice negatives, contrasts and changed information.

🔎

Develop

Use context and collocation to infer an unfamiliar word.

🌟

Stretch

Explain precisely why each distractor fails.

Mastery principleDo not ask only, “Was this mentioned?” Ask, “Does the whole option match the final meaning exactly?”
02

Activate

Diagnostic check فَحْصٌ تَشْخِيصِيٌّ

1. An option repeats several words from the text. What should you do?
2. Which word should make you check for a change?
3. You do not know one word. What is the strongest first response?
03

Teach

Five common distractor patterns خَمْسَةُ أَنْوَاعٍ شَائِعَةٍ مِنَ المُشَتِّتَاتِ

1. Word echo

The option repeats a memorable word but changes the action, person or result.

2. Partly true

One detail is correct, but another part is unsupported or wrong.

3. First idea, not final idea

The text mentions an original plan, then changes it.

4. Opposite through negation

The option misses لا، لَمْ، لَنْ، لَيْسَ or a negative phrase.

5. Reason/result swap

The option reverses what caused the event and what happened because of it.

Distractor warning: “mentioned in the text” does not mean “answers the question”.
Text saysDistractor saysWhy it fails
كَانَ سَيَذْهَبُ بِالحَافِلَةِ، لَكِنَّهُ ذَهَبَ بِالقِطَارِ.He travelled by bus.The bus was the first plan; the train was the final action.
لَمْ تَشْتَرِ سَلْمَى الحَاسُوبَ لِأَنَّهُ غَالٍ.Salma bought an expensive computer.The option ignores the negative verb.
04

Notice

Use context when a word is unfamiliar اِسْتَخْدِمِ السِّيَاقَ

You rarely need a perfect dictionary definition. You need enough meaning to follow the sentence and answer the question.

Grammar clue

Is it a verb, noun, adjective, place or person?

Collocation clue

Which words naturally appear beside it?

Logic clue

What meaning makes the sentence sensible?

بَعْدَ رِحْلَةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ، شَعَرَ المُسَافِرُ بِالإِرْهَاقِ، فَجَلَسَ لِيَسْتَرِيحَ.

You may not know الإِرْهَاق. The phrase رِحْلَةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ, the verb شَعَرَ بِـ and the result جَلَسَ لِيَسْتَرِيحَ show that it means tiredness or exhaustion.

Example A

اِرْتَفَعَتِ الأَسْعَارُ، لِذَلِكَ قَلَّلَتِ الأُسْرَةُ نَفَقَاتِهَا.

نَفَقَات is probably money spent or expenses.

Example B

كَانَ الطَّرِيقُ مُزْدَحِمًا، فَوَصَلْنَا مُتَأَخِّرِينَ.

مُزْدَحِم is probably busy or congested.

Three-question context test: What kind of word is it? What nearby words belong with it? What meaning fits the whole event?
05

Repair

Negative meaning changes the answer النَّفْيُ يُغَيِّرُ المَعْنَى

لالَمْلَنْلَيْسَبِدُونِقَلِيلًا مَا
Present/general

لا أَذْهَبُ إِلَى النَّادِي يَوْمَ الجُمُعَةِ.

Past

لَمْ أُشَاهِدِ الفِيلْمَ أَمْسِ.

Future

لَنْ نُسَافِرَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ.

أَرَادَتْ لَيْلَى حُضُورَ الحَفْلِ، وَلَكِنَّهَا لَمْ تَحْضُرْ لِأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ مَرِيضَةً.
What happened?
لَنْ يَسْتَخْدِمَ أَحْمَدُ السَّيَّارَةَ غَدًا.
06

Deepen

Contrast and correction signals إِشَارَاتُ التَّعَارُضِ وَالتَّصْحِيحِ

لَكِنْغَيْرَ أَنَّمَعَ ذَلِكَبَلْعَلَى الرَّغْمِ مِنْفِي حِينَ

فَكَرَتْ مَرْيَمُ فِي شِرَاءِ هَاتِفٍ جَدِيدٍ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهَا قَرَّرَتْ إِصْلَاحَ هَاتِفِهَا القَدِيمِ.

Final meaning: Maryam considered buying a new phone, but decided to repair the old one.
Contrast rule: slow down immediately after a contrast marker. The decisive information often follows it.
07

Practise

Listening: reject the first-plan trap اِرْفُضْ فَخَّ الخُطَّةِ الأُولَى

Listening text

Listen once for the situation. Listen again for the first plan, the problem and the final decision.

1. Where will they finally meet?
2. Why did the plan change?
3. What is the final meeting time?

Distractor audit laboratory

Question: Which statement is fully correct?

A. Samer now drives to the library because the bus is expensive.

B. Samer studies at the library because it is quiet and now travels there by bus.

C. Samer goes to the library every Friday before it closes.

Correct auditA is old/reversed information; B is fully supported; C ignores the negative لا يذهب.
09

Reflect

Your distractor error log سِجِلُّ أَخْطَاءِ المُشَتِّتَاتِ

Use this after any listening or reading practice. Record the mechanism of the wrong option, not only the question number.

10

Check

Final mastery check تَحَقُّقُ الإِتْقَانِ

1. Which answer should you choose?
2. What does لَنْ signal?
3. Which clues help infer an unknown word?
4. A text mentions two plans. Which usually answers a question about what will happen?
5. What should you do before confirming an option?
11

Continue

Your next step خُطْوَتُكَ التَّالِيَةُ

Repeat

Replay the listening tomorrow and write only first plan → problem → final plan.

Transfer

Audit three wrong options from a pathway task and name each distractor type.

Keep the control

Before choosing, say: “Where is my exact evidence?”
