The R1–R4 hierarchy

1R1 — general meaning

Find the main idea. Surface level.

2R2 — factual detail

Find specific facts. Most Paper 2 marks live here.

3R3 — attitude and style

Analyse why the writer made a language choice — including a conditional, a subjunctive trigger or a concession. This decides whether you score 35 or 45.

4R4 — select and identify

Choose the exact supported statement, and in Q4 the exact grammatical form.
