Apply all six today

The six listening strategies

1Read the questions first

Before the audio, read every question so you know what to listen for.

2Annotate each question

Mark the type of information sought: a name, a number, an opinion, a conditional type, a tense.

اسْمٌ؟ رَقْمٌ؟ رَأْيٌ؟ نَوْعُ شَرْطٍ؟

3First listen for the gist

On the first hearing, answer only what you are confident about.

4Second listen to verify

Use the second hearing to confirm, correct and complete — trust your first answer on plain facts.

5Never leave a blank

An unanswered question scores zero; make your best-supported guess.

6Listen for the grammar signal

A trigger, a conditional particle or صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ tells you the meaning that follows.

لِكَيْ · إِذَا · لَوْ · صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ · غَيْرَ أَنَّ

04

How Paper 1 is scored

The three texts carry 8 + 6 + 6 = 20 raw marks in this practice; in the real Paper 1 the section is scaled to 45. Read the questions in the two-minute gaps, then read each script twice (the audio is in production, so the script stands in for the recording).

The texts below span the five P6 topic areas and carry P6 grammar naturally: conditionals, subjunctive triggers, reported speech and the concession-refutation pair.

1What do the studies indicate is the basis of health?

2What does the expert concede (صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ)?
