Hearing structure in fast speech

سَمَاعُ البُنْيَةِ فِي الكَلَامِ السَّرِيعِ

A listening toolkit: recognise the passive by its vowel shape, catch the conditional signal, and lock statistics down accurately.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

يُعَالَجُ المَرِيضُ فِي المُسْتَشْفَى
What to notice

Passive — fatḥa before the last consonant.

إِذَا أَكَلْتَ الخُضَارَ، سَتُقَلِّلُ خَطَرَ الإِصَابَةِ
What to notice

Conditional signalled by إِذَا.

يَنْخَفِضُ الخَطَرُ بِنِسْبَةِ خَمْسَةٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ بِالْمِئَةِ
What to notice

Statistic anchored by بِالْمِئَةِ.

1

Active vs passive by ear

يُعَالِجُ (kasra) vs يُعَالَجُ (fatḥa)

The vowel before the final consonant tells you the voice.

يُعَالِجُ الطَّبِيبُ المَرِيضَ — activeيُعَالَجُ المَرِيضُ — passive
2

Conditional signal

إِذَا → condition + consequence

Hearing إِذَا, note both what is supposed and what follows.

إِذَا أَكَلْتَ الخُضَارَ يَوْمِيًّا، سَتُقَلِّلُ خَطَرَ الإِصَابَةِ
3

Statistical anchor

number + بِالْمِئَةِ

The word بِالْمِئَةِ marks a percentage; hold the number before writing.

يَنْخَفِضُ الخَطَرُ بِنِسْبَةِ خَمْسَةٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ بِالْمِئَةِ
4

Distractor discipline

specific cause-effect > general statement

A conditional answer is specific; a general health statement is often the distractor.

Correct: إِذَا … سَـ …Distractor: الرِّيَاضَةُ مُفِيدَةٌ لِلْجَمِيعِ
You hearIt signalsListen for
إِذَاa conditionalthe consequence clause
يُ- … -َ-a passivefatḥa before the last consonant
بِالْمِئَةِa statisticthe number before it
يُوصَى / يَنْصَحُa recommendationwhat is advised
1
The passive has a ḍamma-then-fatḥa shape

يُعَالِجُ (active, “treats”) has a kasra on the ل. يُعَالَجُ (passive, “is treated”) has a fatḥa. The prefix يُ carries a ḍamma in both, so listen for the vowel just before the last consonant: fatḥa signals the passive.

2
Arabic numbers put the unit before the ten

خَمْسَةٌ وَثَلَاثُونَ is 35 — you hear “five and thirty”. Learners who write 53 have reversed it. Hold the whole phrase before writing the figure, and let بِالْمِئَةِ anchor that it is a percentage.

Accuracy repair workshop

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

سَمِعْتُ «خَمْسَةٌ وَثَلَاثُونَ» فَكَتَبْتُ ٥٣.

سَمِعْتُ «خَمْسَةٌ وَثَلَاثُونَ» فَكَتَبْتُ ٣٥.

The unit is said before the ten: five and thirty is 35.

«يُعَالَجُ المَرِيضُ» فِعْلٌ مَعْلُومٌ.

«يُعَالَجُ المَرِيضُ» فِعْلٌ مَبْنِيٌّ لِلْمَجْهُولِ.

The fatḥa before the last consonant marks the passive.

اخْتَرْتُ الجُمْلَةَ العَامَّةَ لِأَنَّهَا مُرِيحَةٌ.

اخْتَرْتُ الجُمْلَةَ الَّتِي تُطَابِقُ السَّبَبَ وَالنَّتِيجَةَ.

A general statement is a common distractor; match the specific cue.

Write eighty to ninety words explaining your listening strategy for academic health texts. Describe how you predict, how you tell a passive from an active by ear, and how you avoid reversing Arabic numbers.

Success checklist

  • A prediction step: match each question to its cue word.
  • The passive cue: a fatḥa before the last consonant.
