التَّارِيخُ وَالتَّقْوِيمُ — Dates & Calendars · Numeracy Mastery 06

The final lesson of the Numbers strand — and it opens with the best-kept secret in Arabic: the days of the week are numbers. Sunday is “Day One”, Monday is “Day Two”, Thursday is “Day Five”. Then the twelve Western months (already half-familiar: مَارِس، أَبْرِيل، مَايُو…), the exam date format اليَوْمُ الأَوَّلُ مِنْ شَهْرِ مَايُو, birthdays — and to finish, the Numbers Strand Championship: ten questions across all six lessons. 🏆

مَا التَّارِيخُ؟what's the date?

Choose your route and revision goal

This is the final rich revision chapter in the Numeracy strand. Begin with the Core route, then move into Develop and Stretch for complete dates, schedules, birthdays, date calculations and calendar reading.

Core

  • Name the seven days.
  • Recognise the twelve Western months in Arabic script.
  • Ask and answer مَا التَّارِيخُ؟.

Develop

  • Build full dates with ordinal numbers.
  • Describe birthdays and school events.
  • Read notices and timetables.

Stretch

  • Handle years and 24-hour schedules.
  • Calculate gaps between dates.
  • Explain date-order differences.

Objectives

  • Name the seven days — and see the numbers hiding inside them Listening
  • Read and write the twelve Western months in Arabic script (يَنَايِر، فِبْرَايِر…) Reading
  • Say and dictate dates in a clear formal format: اليَوْمُ الأَوَّلُ مِنْ شَهْرِ مَايُو Speaking
  • Write your important dates — birthday, Eids, holidays Writing

Success Criteria

  • 🟢 I can say today's day and name any month in Arabic.
  • 🟠 I can build any date 1st–10th with the masculine ordinal: الخَامِسُ مِنْ مَارِس.
  • 🟧 I can answer مَتَى عِيدُ مِيلَادُكَ؟ in full — and I know why date ordinals are masculine when clock ordinals were feminine.
Why this matters in the exam This course practises the Western calendar months in Arabic script because dates appear naturally across the four skills: birthdays in Speaking, trip dates in Listening, school notices in Reading and letters that open with a date in Writing. The classic ear trap is يُونْيُو / يُولْيُو (June/July) — one letter apart. We disarm it today.
Part 1 · الجُزْءُ الأَوَّلُ

The counted week — أَيَّامُ الأُسْبُوعِ

Look closely at the days and you'll find Lesson 1 smiling back at you: الأَحَد shares its root with وَاحِد (one), الاثْنَيْن with اثْنَان (two), الثُّلَاثَاء with ثَلَاثَة (three)… The Arabic week is literally a counting song, from Day One to Day Five — then two special guests.

Vocabulary The seven days — سَبْعَةُ أَيَّامٍ

اليَوْمُDayThe number inside
يَوْمُ الأَحَدِSundayوَاحِد — “Day One”
يَوْمُ الاثْنَيْنِMondayاثْنَان — “Day Two”
يَوْمُ الثُّلَاثَاءِTuesdayثَلَاثَة — “Day Three”
يَوْمُ الأَرْبِعَاءِWednesdayأَرْبَعَة — “Day Four”
يَوْمُ الخَمِيسِThursdayخَمْسَة — “Day Five”
يَوْمُ الجُمُعَةِFridayfrom جَمَعَ “to gather” — the day of Jummah! 🕌
يَوْمُ السَّبْتِSaturdayfrom “rest” — cousin of the word Sabbath
Memory gift 🎁 You only truly memorise TWO days — الجُمُعَة and السَّبْت. The other five you already knew the moment you finished Lesson 1. Count them off on your fingers: one-Sunday, two-Monday, three-Tuesday, four-Wednesday, five-Thursday. 🎙️

✍️ Quiz 1 — Day Counter Score: 0/5

💬 Count on your fingers before you tap!

1. يَوْمُ الثُّلَاثَاءِ = ?
✔️ Day Three — ثَلَاثَة is hiding inside. Sunday is Day One, so three lands on Tuesday.
2. Which day hides the number FIVE?
✔️ الخَمِيسخَمْسَة. Thursday is Day Five.
3. يَوْمُ الجُمُعَةِ comes from the root meaning:
✔️ جَمَعَ = to gather — the community gathering for Jummah prayer. The week's crown. 🕌
4. Today is يَوْمُ الاثْنَيْنِ. غَدًا is:
✔️ غَدًا = tomorrow: Day Two → Day Three. (Yesterday would be أَمْسِ.)
5. مَا اليَوْمُ؟ asks about:
✔️ “What day is it?” — answer: اليَوْمُ يَوْمُ… The date question comes next!
Part 2 · الجُزْءُ الثَّانِي

The twelve months — شُهُورُ السَّنَةِ

Here is the core list for this course: the Western calendar months, written in Arabic script. The wonderful news? They are transliterations — sound them out and English pops right out. Twelve words, and you already half-know all of them.

Vocabulary The Western months — الشُّهُورُ المِيلَادِيَّةُ

يَنَايِر1 · January
فِبْرَايِر2 · February
مَارِس3 · March
أَبْرِيل4 · April
مَايُو5 · May
يُونْيُو6 · June
يُولْيُو7 · July
أَغُسْطُس8 · August
سِبْتَمْبِر9 · September
أُكْتُوبِر10 · October
نُوفَمْبِر11 · November
دِيسَمْبِر12 · December
The June/July ear trap 👂 يُونْيُو (June) and يُولْيُو (July) differ by ONE letter: ن vs ل. In fast Listening audio they blur. The anchor: JuNe has the ن (nūn), JuLy has the ل (lām). N for نون, L for لام — the trap dissolves.
Heritage link 🌙 — two calendars, one life You live by BOTH calendars: التَّقْوِيمُ المِيلَادِيُّ (the Western/Gregorian — مِيلَاد = birth, dating from the birth of ʿĪsā عليه السلام) and التَّقْوِيمُ الهِجْرِيُّ (dating from the Hijrah). And you already know a Hijri fact in exam Arabic: Ramadan is الشَّهْرُ التَّاسِعُ — Lesson 1's ordinal, doing sacred work.

✍️ Quiz 2 — Month Master Score: 0/6

👍 Sound them out — the English is hiding inside!

1. مَارِس = ?
✔️ Sound it out: Māris → March, month 3.
2. Month number 9 is:
✔️ September — the back-to-school month. (October is 10, November 11.)
3. 👂 The trip is فِي يُولْيُو. That's:
✔️ The ل gives it away: JuLy = يُولْيُو. June would carry the ن.
4. Which month comes straight after أَبْرِيل?
✔️ April → May: أَبْرِيل → مَايُو. (March comes before, June after May.)
5. التَّقْوِيمُ المِيلَادِيُّ means:
✔️ From مِيلَاد (birth). The Islamic one is الهِجْرِيُّ, counting from the Hijrah.
6. In the Hijri calendar, Ramadan is الشَّهْرُ التَّاسِعُ — month number:
✔️ التَّاسِعُ = ninth — Lesson 1's ordinal marking the holiest month. 🌙
Part 3 · الجُزْءُ الثَّالِثُ

Saying the date — مَا التَّارِيخُ اليَوْمَ؟

Now the core date formula: اليَوْمُ الأَوَّلُ مِنْ شَهْرِ مَايُو — “the first day of the month of May”. It is built entirely from parts you own: Lesson 1's ordinals + مِنْ + a month. One pattern, every date of the year.

The formula Ordinal + مِنْ (شَهْرِ) + month

DateبِالعَرَبِيَّةِNote
1 Mayاليَوْمُ الأَوَّلُ مِنْ شَهْرِ مَايُوthe full exam format
3 Sepالثَّالِثُ مِنْ سِبْتَمْبِرthe everyday short form — شَهْرِ optional
5 Marالخَامِسُ مِنْ مَارِسLesson 1 ordinals, masculine
10 Janالعَاشِرُ مِنْ يَنَايِر1st–10th: your core set
15 Augالخَامِسَ عَشَرَ مِنْ أَغُسْطُسteens: الحَادِيَ عَشَرَ، الثَّانِيَ عَشَرَ…
20 Decالعِشْرُونَ مِنْ دِيسَمْبِرtens work as ordinals too
25 Mayالخَامِسُ وَالعِشْرُونَ مِنْ مَايُوcompounds: “the fifth-and-twentieth”
The great gender contrast ⚖️ Clock times were feminine (السَّاعَةُ الخَامِسَةُ) because سَاعَة is feminine. Dates are masculine (اليَوْمُ الخَامِسُ) because يَوْم is masculine. Same rule, opposite outfits — the system has never once changed since Lesson 1. That is the whole secret of Arabic numbers.
The birthday question 🎂 — guaranteed Speaking material مَتَى عِيدُ مِيلَادُكَ؟ — عِيدُ مِيلَادِي فِي الخَامِسِ مِنْ مَارِس. When is your birthday? — My birthday is on the 5th of March. Notice فِي الخَامِسِ — after فِي the ordinal takes a kasrah, exactly as clock times did (فِي السَّاعَةِ الخَامِسَةِ). Old friend, new context.

✍️ Quiz 3 — Date Builder Score: 0/5

💬 Build it aloud before tapping!

1. "The first of May" (full exam format):
✔️ يَوْم is masculine → الأَوَّلُ. (الأُولَى was for feminine السَّنَة الأُولَى.)
2. الثَّالِثُ مِنْ سِبْتَمْبِر = ?
✔️ الثَّالِثُ = the third. The 13th would be الثَّالِثَ عَشَرَ — two words.
3. Why اليَوْمُ الخَامِسُ but السَّاعَةُ الخَامِسَةُ؟
✔️ Six lessons, one unchanging rule: the number dresses to match its noun. 🗝️
4. عِيدُ مِيلَادِي فِي العِشْرِينَ مِنْ يُونْيُو — the birthday is:
✔️ العِشْرِينَ = the 20th, and the ن in يُونْيُو = JuNe. Both traps dodged at once!
5. Write ٢٠٢٦/٣/١٥ in words:
✔️ Day/month/year order: 15 March 2026 → the teen ordinal الخَامِسَ عَشَرَ.
Part 4 · الجُزْءُ الرَّابِعُ

Dates in my life — تَوَارِيخُ مُهِمَّةٌ

A date only matters when it belongs to something — a birthday, an Eid, the first day of the holidays. Here is the vocabulary of the year's landmarks, and the sentence patterns to talk about yours.

Vocabulary The landmarks of the year

✍️ Quiz 4 — My Year Score: 0/5

👥 Partner check: translate aloud first.

1. العُطْلَةُ = ?
✔️ Everyone's favourite word — العُطْلَةُ الصَّيْفِيَّةُ, the summer holidays.
2. رَأْسُ السَّنَةِ literally means:
✔️ New Year = the year's “head” — Arabic loves a good body metaphor.
3. تَبْدَأُ الاِمْتِحَانَاتُ فِي الخَامِسِ مِنْ مَايُو:
✔️ تَبْدَأُ = start (from Lesson 2's تَبْدَأُ المَدْرَسَةُ), and الخَامِسِ = the 5th.
4. الأُسْبُوعَ القَادِمَ = ?
✔️ قَادِم = coming. Last week is المَاضِي — “the one that passed”.
5. The notice reads: الرِّحْلَةُ يَوْمَ الأَرْبِعَاءِ، العَاشِرَ مِنْ يُونْيُو. The trip is:
✔️ الأَرْبِعَاء = Day Four = Wednesday, العَاشِر = 10th, and the ن = June. Three skills, one line.

How dates support wider language skills — التَّارِيخُ فِي مَهَارَاتِ اللُّغَةِ

Three disguises: a school notice in Reading, birthdays in Listening, and the personal questions in Speaking. All three, one last time.

Task A · Reading 📖 The school notice — إِعْلَانٌ: أَيَّامٌ مُهِمَّةٌ

  1. On which day AND date do the exams begin?
  2. When is the school trip? (Watch the June/July trap!)
  3. What happens on 27 May — and why is everyone happy?
  4. When do the summer holidays begin?
  5. Detective question: how many days of holiday between the trip (10 June) and the end of June?
  1. Monday 4 Mayيَوْمَ الاثْنَيْنِ، الرَّابِعَ مِنْ مَايُو (Day Two + the 4th).
  2. Wednesday 10 June — the ن in يُونْيُو confirms June, not July.
  3. Eid al-Adhaالسَّابِعَ وَالعِشْرِينَ = the 27th, and it's عُطْلَةٌ لِلْجَمِيعِ — a holiday for everyone! 🎉
  4. 1 Julyفِي الأَوَّلِ مِنْ يُولْيُو, this time with the ل of July.
  5. June has 30 days → 30 − 10 = 20 days. The notice never says it; your Lesson 1 arithmetic does.

Task B · Listening 🎧 Three birthdays

Listen without looking first. Ask a partner or reader to say each line twice, then write each birthday in day/month format.

🎧 Audio is coming soon.

1. Sara — 3/3 (الثَّالِثِ مِنْ مَارِس).   2. Omar — 10/6 (يُونْيُو with the ن — anyone who wrote July replays the line!).   3. Zaynab — 31/12 (الحَادِي وَالثَّلَاثِينَ = the thirty-first), New Year's Eve — لَيْلَةَ رَأْسِ السَّنَةِ.

Task C · Speaking & Writing ✍️ Your dates — تَوَارِيخُكَ!

Answer aloud 🎙️, then write. These are high-value speaking questions.

Examiner questions مَا التَّارِيخُ اليَوْمَ؟

اليَوْمُ يَوْمُ الأَحَدِ، الثَّانِيَ عَشَرَ مِنْ يُولْيُو. — عِيدُ مِيلَادِي فِي الخَامِسِ مِنْ مَارِس. — تَبْدَأُ العُطْلَةُ الصَّيْفِيَّةُ فِي الأَوَّلِ مِنْ يُولْيُو، وَأَنَا سَعِيدٌ جِدًّا! Today is Sunday, 12 July. — My birthday is on 5 March. — The summer holidays start on 1 July, and I'm very happy!

💡 The last answer adds a feeling (وَأَنَا سَعِيدٌ جِدًّا) — the one-extra-detail habit that lifts every role-play into the top band.
