A question word creates an information gap

Good communication depends on asking for the right category of information and recognising what the answer must supply.

Who is this?Ask about a person.
What are you doing?Ask about an action or object of a verb.

مَا and مَاذَا

Both can mean “what”, but practical learner patterns make their main uses easier to control.

مَا: identity, name and category

مَاذَا: actions and direct objects

Accuracy note: Arabic permits some overlap between مَا and مَاذَا. The house pattern above gives learners a reliable functional distinction without claiming that every alternative is impossible.

Prepositions distinguish static location, origin and destination.

Location

Origin

Destination

Do not answer all three with the same bare place name. Keep the preposition that expresses the relationship.

✅ Mini-check: place

0/4

1. Ask where someone lives.

2. Ask where someone comes from.

3. Ask where the bus is going.

4. Choose the answer to

7

مَتَى and كَيْفَ

Ask when something happens, how someone feels or by what method an action occurs.

مَتَى: time

كَيْفَ: state or manner

8

لِمَاذَا: reason and explanation

A why-question should lead to a reason, not simply another fact.

The answer explains the preference.
The answer matches the past time frame.
Extend further: reason + result creates cohesion:
9

Question words with prepositions

Prepositions remain meaningful parts of the question and often shape the answer.
