Questions open every conversation
Yes/no questions let students check information, request confirmation and sustain practical speaking across every Cambridge topic.
Choose your route
Secure the two question markers first, then add answer logic and negative questions.

Starter diagnostic
Decide whether each item is already a question and identify what must change.
🔎 Yes/No Starter
0/61. Which particle can turn a complete statement into a neutral yes/no question?
2. Choose the correctly written hamza question.
3. Which question keeps Arabic word order?
4. Choose the question “Is this your bag?” to one female.
5. Which word normally answers an affirmative yes/no question positively?
6. Which structure asks a genuine either/or question?
هَلْ: the reliable neutral question marker
Place هَلْ before a complete nominal or verbal sentence. Do not rebuild the sentence in English order.
| Statement | Question | What stayed the same? |
|---|---|---|
| أَنْتَ مُسْتَعِدٌ. | هَلْ أَنْتَ مُسْتَعِدٌ؟ | Nominal sentence order and agreement |
| تَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ. | هَلْ تَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ؟ | Present verb and encoded subject |
| زَارَتْ سَلْمَى جَدَّتَهَا. | هَلْ زَارَتْ سَلْمَى جَدَّتَهَا؟ | Past tense and feminine agreement |
| سَتُسَافِرُونَ غَدًا. | هَلْ سَتُسَافِرُونَ غَدًا؟ | Future marker and plural agreement |
✅ Mini-check: add هَلْ
0/41. Turn أَنْتِ مُتْعَبَةٌ into a question.
2. Turn وَصَلَتِ الْحَافِلَةُ into a question.
3. Choose the future question.
4. Which sentence wrongly copies English question structure?
The interrogative hamza أَ
The hamza is shorter and more compact than هَلْ. It attaches to the next word and can introduce alternatives.
Direct confirmation
أَتَعْمَلُ فِي الْمُسْتَشْفَى؟
Do you work in the hospital?
أَهَذِهِ سَيَّارَتُكِ؟
Is this your car?
Choice with أَمْ
أَتُفَضِّلُ الشَّايَ أَمِ الْقَهْوَةَ؟
Do you prefer tea or coffee?
أَسَتَذْهَبُ الْيَوْمَ أَمْ غَدًا؟
Will you go today or tomorrow?
✅ Mini-check: hamza or هَلْ
0/41. Choose the correctly spaced question.
2. Choose the best alternative question.
3. Which marker is especially useful with أَمْ?
4. Choose “Is this your teacher?” to one male.
Word order, tense and agreement
The particle asks the question; the verb still carries person, gender, number and time.
| Time frame | Question | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Past | هَلْ زُرْتُمْ الْمَتْحَفَ أَمْسِ؟ | زُرْتُمْ + أَمْسِ |
| Present/habit | هَلْ تَقْرَأِينَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ؟ | تَقْرَأِينَ + كُلَّ يَوْمٍ |
| Future | هَلْ سَيَصِلُ الْقِطَارُ قَرِيبًا؟ | سَـ + مُضَارِع |
| Nominal state | هَلْ أَنْتُنَّ مُسْتَعِدَّاتٌ؟ | Feminine plural subject and predicate |
Answer the meaning—not only the particle
A useful response repeats enough language to confirm the information clearly.
Positive answer
هَلْ تَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ الْقَدَمِ؟
نَعَمْ، أَلْعَبُهَا كُلَّ أُسْبُوعٍ.
Yes, I play it every week.
Negative answer
هَلْ ذَهَبْتِ إِلَى السُّوقِ؟
لَا، لَمْ أَذْهَبْ إِلَيْهِ.
No, I did not go there.
Answer an alternative
أَتُفَضِّلُ الْقِرَاءَةَ أَمِ السِّبَاحَةَ؟
أُفَضِّلُ الْقِرَاءَةَ لِأَنَّهَا هَادِئَةٌ.
Extend naturally
Give the answer, then add a reason, time phrase or contrast. This turns a one-word reply into speaking evidence.
Negative questions and بَلَى
Negative questions require careful logic because English “yes” can be ambiguous.
| Question | Response | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| أَلَيْسَ الْجَوُّ جَمِيلًا؟ | بَلَى، هُوَ جَمِيلٌ. | On the contrary, yes—it is beautiful. |
| أَلَمْ تَزُرِ الْمَتْحَفَ؟ | بَلَى، زُرْتُهُ. | Yes, I did visit it. |
| أَلَيْسَ الطَّرِيقُ طَوِيلًا؟ | نَعَمْ، لَيْسَ قَصِيرًا. | Yes, it is not short / the negative statement is confirmed. |
Misconception clinic
Repair English transfer, duplicated markers and incomplete answers.
✓ هَلْ تَذْهَبُ؟
Do not combine a yes/no marker with an unrelated question word.
✓ هَلْ تَذْهَبُ؟ or أَتَذْهَبُ؟
Use one yes/no marker, not both.
✓ أَتُحِبُّ...
The hamza attaches directly.
Stronger answer: نَعَمْ، أُحِبُّهَا لِأَنَّهَا مُفِيدَةٌ.
🛠 Repair lab

3. Best full answer to هَلْ قَرَأْتَ الْكِتَابَ؟

هَلْ وَصَلْتِ إِلَى الْمَحَطَّةِ؟ أَعِنْدَكِ التَّذْكِرَةُ؟ هَلْ سَيَصِلُ الْقِطَارُ فِي الْمَوْعِدِ؟
Identify the three pieces of information the sender wants confirmed.
