Simple Non-Verbal Sentences الْجُمَلُ الِاسْمِيَّةُ الْبَسِيطَةُ

Build clear present-time statements of identity, description and location without inserting an English-style “to be” verb.

مُبْتَدَأٌsubject/topic
خَبَرٌpredicate
هُوَ مُهَنْدِسٌidentity
أَنَا فِي الْبَنْكِlocation
A

Why this matters لِمَاذَا تَهُمُّ الْجُمْلَةُ الِاسْمِيَّةُ؟

Arabic can state identity, description and location without a present-tense form of “to be”.

Core

Build a clear subject + predicate sentence without adding an unnecessary verb.

Develop

Control gender, number, definiteness and prepositional predicates.

Stretch

Recognise case-aware models and distinguish several predicate types.

Communication target: identify people and things, describe them and say where they are in natural Modern Standard Arabic.
B

Diagnostic start

Use this as a low-stakes readiness check, not as a final test.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Which Arabic sentence means “He is an engineer”?

2. Which is a complete sentence meaning “The house is large”?

3. Choose the correct feminine form.

4. Which means “I am in the bank”?

5. Which demonstrative matches سَيَّارَةٌ?

6. Which is an adjective phrase rather than a complete sentence?

1

The present equational sentence

Arabic normally places the subject and predicate beside one another; English supplies am/is/are in translation.

Core pattern: الْمُبْتَدَأُ + الْخَبَرُ — subject/topic + information about it.
FunctionArabic modelMeaning
Identityهُوَ مُهَنْدِسٌ.He is an engineer.
Descriptionالْجَوُّ جَمِيلٌ.The weather is beautiful.
Classificationهَذَا كِتَابٌ.This is a book.
Locationأَنَا فِي الْبَنْكِ.I am in the bank.
Common transfer error: Do not insert يَكُونُ simply because English contains “is”. هُوَ مُهَنْدِسٌ is the natural present statement.
2

Agreement in single-word predicates

A noun or adjective predicate should fit the intended person or noun in gender and number.

Subject typeModelDecision
Boundary: full case endings help explain the structure, but communicative control comes first. The later Case Endings package will analyse them systematically.

Agreement Check

0/4

1. Choose “The teacher (f.) is active.”

2. Choose “The two boys are ready.”

3. Choose “The books are useful.”

4. Choose the location sentence.

3

Phrase or complete sentence?

Definiteness often reveals whether the adjective belongs inside a noun phrase or acts as the predicate.

FormMeaningAnalysis
الْبَيْتُ الْكَبِيرُthe large housedefinite noun phrase
الْبَيْتُ كَبِيرٌ.The house is large.complete nominal sentence
مَدْرَسَةٌ جَدِيدَةٌa new schoolindefinite noun phrase
الْمَدْرَسَةُ جَدِيدَةٌ.The school is new.complete nominal sentence
Do not confuse: الطَّالِبُ الْمُجْتَهِدُ names “the hardworking student”; الطَّالِبُ مُجْتَهِدٌ states “The student is hardworking.”
4

Three practical predicate types

A predicate may be one word, a prepositional phrase or a locator/adverbial expression.

Predicate typeModelWhat it tells us
single noun/adjectiveأَخِي طَبِيبٌ.identity or description
prepositional phraseأَخِي فِي الْمُسْتَشْفَى.location
locator phraseالْمَدْرَسَةُ أَمَامَ الْمَسْجِدِ.relative position
time expressionالِامْتِحَانُ غَدًا.when
Useful feature: a prepositional predicate does not change for masculine/feminine agreement: هُوَ فِي الْبَيْتِ and هِيَ فِي الْبَيْتِ.

Repair the structure, then explain the decision.

Use nominal sentences to describe a person, place and everyday situation.

هَذِهِ مَدْرَسَتِي. هِيَ كَبِيرَةٌ وَحَدِيثَةٌ، وَالْمَكْتَبَةُ فِي الطَّابِقِ الْأَوَّلِ.
Read: identify three nominal sentences and their predicate types.
أَنَا طَالِبَةٌ. مَادَّتِي الْمُفَضَّلَةُ الْعَرَبِيَّةُ، وَصَفِّي قُرْبَ الْمَكْتَبَةِ.
Speak: adapt the model with true information.

Describe a person and a place

Write 80–100 Arabic words introducing yourself or another person and describing a familiar place.
