Why this matters مِنَ الْقَاعِدَةِ إِلَى التَّوَاصُلِ

Cambridge performance depends on using structures accurately in meaningful answers, not naming rules in isolation.

Core

Build clear VSO and SVO cores.

Develop

Expand and transform sentences across time frames.

Stretch

Edit sustained writing for focus, agreement and cohesion.

Final performance: produce a connected account containing deliberate VSO/SVO variety and explain two of your agreement choices.
B

Diagnostic start

This check combines the previous three lessons.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Best VSO core for “The students completed the project.”

2. Best SVO core for the same meaning.

3. Add a manner phrase to كَتَبَتْ لَيْلَى الرِّسَالَةَ.

4. Negate the past event with لَمْ.

5. Ask a yes/no question about the event.

6. First editing pass?

1

Choose the order for a reason

Both patterns are useful. The best choice depends on what the listener already knows and what you want to foreground.

Communicative purposePreferred openingModel
Report a new eventVerb firstفَازَ الْفَرِيقُ بِالْمُبَارَاةِ.
Continue talking about a known person/groupSubject firstالْفَرِيقُ لَعِبَ بِمَهَارَةٍ.
Contrast two topicsSubject firstعَلِيٌّ دَرَسَ، أَمَّا أَخُوهُ فَلَعِبَ.
Narrate a sequenceOften verb firstوَصَلَ الطُّلَّابُ، ثُمَّ بَدَأَ الدَّرْسُ.
Answer “What did they do?”Subject first can be naturalالطُّلَّابُ أَكْمَلُوا الْمَشْرُوعَ.
Variety is not random: Do not alternate VSO and SVO merely to appear advanced. Change order when it improves focus, contrast or flow.

1. You have already mentioned the girls and now say what they did.

2. Open a report with the event “The train arrived.”

3. Contrast Ali and Maryam.

The sentence-building ladder

Sentence Ladder Check

0/4

1. Which addition gives a reason?

2. Which addition gives manner?

3. Which expanded sentence remains accurate?

4. What should be checked after adding a clause?

3

Transform across past, present and future

Keep the order and roles stable while changing the verb system and time expression.

Future negativeلَنْ يَزُورَ الطُّلَّابُ الْمَتْحَفَ غَدًا.الطُّلَّابُ لَنْ يَزُورُوا الْمَتْحَفَ غَدًا.
Editing question: Did you change only the time marker, or did you also rebuild the verb form required by the order and subject?
4

Questions and negation preserve the core roles

Particles may come before the verbal sentence, but the subject and agreement rules remain visible.

Do not mix systems: لَمْ كَتَبَ is incorrect because لَمْ requires a jussive present form.
5

A four-pass editing routine

Edit one feature at a time so that a long paragraph does not hide a small but important agreement error.

PassQuestionAction
1 RolesWhat is the verb? Who is the intended subject? Is there an object?mark V, S and O
2 OrderDoes the subject come before or after the verb?select full or singular-number agreement
3 Verb formDoes person, gender, number, tense and mood fit?repair prefix/suffix/end vowel
4 ExpansionAre pronouns, prepositions, time words and connectors clear?check reference and logical flow
Read backwards for agreement: Start at the end of a sentence, find the subject and return to the verb. This interrupts the habit of reading only for meaning.

1. Repair: كَتَبُوا الطُّلَّابُ الْإِجَابَاتِ.

2. Repair: الطَّالِبَاتُ قَدَّمَتِ الْعَرْضَ.

3. Repair: لَمْ ذَهَبَ الطُّلَّابُ.

4. Repair unclear pronoun: قَرَأَتْ مَرْيَمُ الرِّسَالَةَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَهُ.

6

Cambridge application without turning grammar into a drill

Sentence control supports comprehension and production across all four papers.

Reading and listening

Use verb endings and word order to track who performed an action, especially when several people or groups are mentioned.

Speaking and writing

Use accurate agreement across past, present and future, then link sentences naturally. Range helps only when communication remains clear.

Original exam-style task: Describe a school event in 90 words. Include what happened, what two groups did, what did not happen and what will happen next. This tests communication, not rule recitation.

Integrated misconception clinic

📖 Reading audit

Read a short event report. Underline every verb, box each explicit subject and draw a line to any attached object pronoun.

🗣️ Speaking transformation

Say one event first in VSO, then retell it with the subject first. Explain aloud how the verb changed.

Final verbal-sentence performance

Write 120–140 Arabic words about a memorable day, school event, journey or community activity. Use deliberate sentence-order variety and accurate agreement.

Success checklist: Use at least six VSO sentences and four SVO sentences; include human masculine and feminine plurals, one dual, one non-human plural, past/present/future, one question or reported question, and two negative structures. Complete the four-pass edit before saving.
