Verb-First Agreement الْمُطَابَقَةُ عِنْدَ تَقَدُّمِ الْفِعْلِ

When the verb comes before an explicit dual or plural subject, formal MSA normally keeps the verb singular in number while matching the subject’s gender.

A

Why this matters لِمَاذَا يَتَغَيَّرُ الْعَدَدُ؟

The VSO rule is one of the most frequent agreement points in formal Arabic reading and writing.

Core

Use singular masculine/feminine verbs before overt plural subjects.

Develop

Control dual, plural and time-frame contrasts.

Stretch

Handle feminine connected pronunciation and coordinated-subject choices.

Communication target: narrate events in formal VSO without copying the plural ending from a subject that follows the verb.

This check targets the exact error that commonly appears when learners move between SVO and VSO.

1. Complete formal VSO: ___ الطُّلَّابُ الْوَاجِبَ.

2. Complete formal VSO: ___ الطَّالِبَاتُ الْوَاجِبَ.

3. Complete formal VSO: ___ الطَّالِبَانِ الْوَاجِبَ.

4. Complete formal VSO: ___ الطَّالِبَتَانِ الْوَاجِبَ.

5. Which order requires full plural agreement?

6. What remains matched in verb-first order?

1

The formal VSO agreement rule

With an explicit noun subject after the verb, the verb normally agrees in gender but remains singular in number.

Memory line: الْفِعْلُ أَوَّلًا ← مُفْرَدٌ فِي الْعَدَدِ، مُطَابِقٌ فِي الْجِنْسِ.
Following subjectVerb before itModel
masculine singularmasculine singularكَتَبَ الطَّالِبُ.

masculine/mixed pluralmasculine singularكَتَبَ الطُّلَّابُ.
feminine singularfeminine singularكَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَةُ.
feminine dualfeminine singularكَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَتَانِ.
feminine pluralfeminine singularكَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَاتُ.
Register note: Full-agreement VSO can occur in some modern usage and dialect-influenced styles, but the syllabus target and safest formal examination pattern is singular agreement before an overt dual/plural subject.
2

Past-tense VSO

Remove dual or plural number endings from the verb, but keep the correct gender.

Present-tense VSO

The present prefix shows gender; the dual/plural suffix disappears before the overt subject.

Subject-first SVOVerb-first VSOWhat to notice

Important: Before a feminine plural noun, use third-person feminine singular تَكْتُبُ, not feminine plural يَكْتُبْنَ.

Present VSO Check

1. Complete: ___ الطُّلَّابُ فِي الْمَكْتَبَةِ.

2. Complete: ___ الطَّالِبَاتُ فِي الْمَكْتَبَةِ.

3. Complete: ___ الْمُعَلِّمَتَانِ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ.

4. Which is formal VSO?

4

Future VSO

The future marker does not change the agreement rule; it attaches to the singular present form.

سَيَكْتُبُ الطَّالِبَانِ غَدًا.
Masculine dual subject follows; singular masculine future verb.
سَتَكْتُبُ الطَّالِبَتَانِ غَدًا.
Feminine dual subject follows; singular feminine future verb.
سَيَكْتُبُ الطُّلَّابُ غَدًا.
Masculine/mixed plural subject follows.
سَتَكْتُبُ الطَّالِبَاتُ غَدًا.
Feminine plural subject follows.
With لَنْ: لَنْ يَكْتُبَ الطُّلَّابُ and لَنْ تَكْتُبَ الطَّالِبَاتُ retain singular gender agreement before the overt plural subject.
5

Reading feminine VSO accurately

A feminine singular past verb ends in silent تْ. In connected speech before a word beginning with hamzat al-waṣl, a helping kasra may be pronounced.

كَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَةُ الرِّسَالَةَ.
katabati ṭ-ṭālibatu… in connected fully supported reading.
كَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَتَانِ الرِّسَالَةَ.
The verb is still singular feminine despite the dual subject.
كَتَبَتِ الطَّالِبَاتُ الرِّسَالَةَ.
The verb is still singular feminine despite the plural subject.
الطَّالِبَاتُ كَتَبْنَ الرِّسَالَةَ.
Subject first changes the verb to feminine plural.
Writing principle: Do not invent a new suffix. The helping vowel supports connected pronunciation; the agreement rule remains unchanged.
6

Non-human plurals: the two rules point to the same form

A non-human plural is feminine singular in agreement, and a verb before any overt plural subject is singular in number.

OrderModelWhy
VSOوَصَلَتِ الْحَافِلَاتُ مُبَكِّرًا.verb-first singular + non-human feminine singular
SVOالْحَافِلَاتُ وَصَلَتْ مُبَكِّرًا.non-human plural remains feminine singular even subject-first
VSO presentتَعْمَلُ الْحَوَاسِيبُ بِسُرْعَةٍ.singular feminine present
SVO presentالْحَوَاسِيبُ تَعْمَلُ بِسُرْعَةٍ.same feminine singular agreement
Useful contrast: Human plural order changes number agreement; non-human plural order normally does not.
