Clause Linkers and Paragraph Cohesion رَوَابِطُ الْجُمَلِ وَتَمَاسُكُ الْفِقْرَةِ

Move from sentence linking to paragraph architecture: introduce beliefs, exceptions, topic shifts, place clauses, time clauses and cohesive consequences.

أَعْتَقِدُ أَنَّreport an idea
أَمَّا…فَـorganise topics
بَعْدَمَا · قَبْلَ أَنْlink time clauses

A

Why this matters

Paragraph cohesion lets a reader follow the writer’s thinking across sentences. Advanced-looking linkers help only when they are structurally and logically accurate.

Core

Use أعتقد أنَّ, بعدما, قبل أن and منذ أن.

Develop

Use أمّا…فـ, حيث and إلا accurately.

Stretch

Combine contrast, concession and topic organisation across a paragraph.

Cambridge link: The 2028 specimen Paper 4 mark scheme rewards a range of simple connectors in the shorter task and extended, well-linked sentences with varied structures in the longer task. It does not allocate automatic marks for named “advanced” linkers.

Diagnostic start

Select the structure that matches the function and formal register.

🔎 Entry Check

1. Complete: أَعْتَقِدُ ___ التَّعَلُّمَ مُهِمٌّ.

2. Choose a topic-shift frame.

3. Choose “after I finished”.

4. Choose formal “before I leave”.

5. Choose “since I began studying”.

6. Do less common connectors earn automatic marks?

Content clauses with أَنَّ

أنَّ lets a verb of thinking, believing, knowing or saying carry a complete idea.

Supported case awareness: In fully marked models, the subject after أَنَّ is accusative: أَنَّ الطَّقْسَ, أَنَّ الدِّرَاسَةَ. Full إنّ-family analysis belongs in Nominal Sentences.

Specific links: أَمَّا…فَـ، حَيْثُ، إِلَّا

These connectors are not interchangeable; each has a distinct discourse job.

StructureFunctionModel

بَيْنَمَاwhile / whereas; contrast or simultaneous actionأُفَضِّلُ الْمَدِينَةَ، بَيْنَمَا يُفَضِّلُ أَخِي الرِّيفَ.
Translation correction: حَيْثُ primarily means “where / in the place where” in this lesson. Do not use it mechanically for English “whereas”; بَيْنَمَا is the clearer contrast linker.
أَمَّا…فَـ is a pair: Do not leave the second half without فَـ: أَمَّا الْبَيْتُ فَهُوَ وَاسِعٌ.

Specific Link Check

0/4

1. As for online learning, it is flexible.

2. I live where services are available.

3. I eat all fruit except bananas.

4. I prefer the city, whereas my brother prefers the countryside.

3

Time clauses: after, before and since

A time linker relates one action to another, not merely to a time noun.

StructureCore useModel

مُنْذُ أَنْ + pastsince an action began/happenedتَحَسَّنَتْ لُغَتِي مُنْذُ أَنْ بَدَأْتُ التَّدَرُّبَ.
House form: The syllabus lists forms such as “بعد ما / قبل ما”. Miftah uses standard written MSA بَعْدَمَا or بَعْدَ أَنْ, and قَبْلَ أَنْ for formal examination writing.
Subjunctive link: After قَبْلَ أَنْ, the present verb is subjunctive: قَبْلَ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ, not أَذْهَبُ in a fully marked model.

1. After I arrived, I called my family.

2. Check the answer before you submit it.

3. My Arabic has improved since I started practising.

4. Formal Miftah house form for “before I leave”.

4

Build a cohesive paragraph

Plan the relationship between sentences before selecting linkers.

Belief → reason → topic shift → contrast → consequence.
بَعْدَمَا وَصَلْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، ذَهَبْنَا إِلَى الْفُنْدُقِ. ثُمَّ خَرَجْنَا حَيْثُ تُوجَدُ الْمَطَاعِمُ الشَّهِيرَةُ.
Time sequence plus place clause.
Paper 4 principle: The longer writing task rewards extended, well-linked sentences and a range of structures used appropriately. One accurate complex sentence is stronger evidence than several memorised linkers placed unnaturally.

Read cohesion signals, reconstruct a paragraph and produce an extended well-linked response.

Weak cohesion: the relationship is hidden.
أَوَّلًا… ثُمَّ… لِأَنَّ… لِذَلِكَ… أَمَّا… فَـ… وَلَكِنْ…
Improved only when each signal matches the intended logic.

Write an extended cohesive response

Write 130–140 Arabic words on one topic: online learning, transport, holidays, technology or the environment. Organise the response into a clear sequence of ideas rather than a list of sentences.

Success checklist: Include أعتقد أنَّ; one reason and result chain; one أمّا…فـ topic shift; one contrast; one time clause with بعدما/قبل أن/منذ أن; one precise prepositional phrase.

What you can now do

  • Use أَنَّ after high-frequency verbs of thought and reporting.
  • Use أَمَّا…فَـ, حَيْثُ and إِلَّا for specific discourse functions.
  • Build formal time links with بَعْدَمَا/بَعْدَ أَنْ, قَبْلَ أَنْ and مُنْذُ أَنْ.
  • Edit a paragraph for logical, accurate and varied cohesion.

Spaced revisit: Return in two or three days and complete the final check again without looking at the tables.
