Core Conjunctions and Logical Links حُرُوفُ الْعَطْفِ وَالرَّبْطِ

Stop joining every idea with وَ. Select the connector that shows the real logical relationship: addition, choice, sequence, contrast, reason or result.

وَ · أَوْadd or choose
ثُمَّ · فَـsequence and immediacy
لَكِنْcontrast
لِأَنَّ · لِذَلِكَreason and result
A

Why this matters

Connectors make the relationship between ideas visible. Without them, a reader must guess whether the next sentence adds, contrasts, explains or concludes.

Core

Use وَ، أَوْ، ثُمَّ، لَكِنْ and لِأَنَّ.

Develop

Distinguish ثُمَّ, فَـ and لِذَلِكَ by meaning.

Stretch

Use وَلَكِنَّ accurately before a nominal clause.

Communication target: Give an opinion, reason, contrasting point and consequence in one connected answer.
B

Diagnostic start

Name the relationship before choosing the Arabic word.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Choose the connector that adds equal information.

2. Choose the connector that presents an alternative.

3. Choose a sequence with a later next step.

4. Choose a contrast.

5. Choose a reason.

6. Choose a result.

The connector logic map

A varied paragraph is not a paragraph with many different linkers. It is a paragraph in which each linker expresses the intended relationship.

FunctionCore connectorModel

Range is not random variety: Replacing every وَ with a more formal word can make the logic worse. Accuracy and appropriateness come first.

1. The bus arrived; immediately I boarded it.

2. I like sport, but I do not play every day.

3. I stayed home because I was ill.

4. The train was cancelled; therefore we travelled by bus.

2

Sequence: ثُمَّ versus فَـ

Both can translate as “then”, but they do not always present the timing in the same way.

غَسَلْتُ وَجْهِي، ثُمَّ تَنَاوَلْتُ الْفَطُورَ.
Two ordered stages; ثُمَّ allows a natural interval.
دَقَّ الْجَرَسُ فَدَخَلَ الطُّلَّابُ.
The bell rang, so/immediately the students entered.
دَرَسْتُ بِجِدٍّ فَنَجَحْتُ.
The second clause is a consequence.
أَوَّلًا خَطَّطْتُ، ثُمَّ كَتَبْتُ، وَأَخِيرًا رَاجَعْتُ.
A complete sequence with varied markers.
Do not force the distinction: Natural usage has overlap. For learners, use ثُمَّ for a clearly ordered later step and فَـ when the next action or result follows closely.

Sequence Check

1. The alarm rang and I immediately woke up.

2. First we visited the museum; later we ate.

3. I trained hard, so I improved.

4. Which is most accurate?

3

Contrast with لَكِنْ and وَلَكِنَّ

The simple linker لكنْ can introduce a contrasting clause. ولكنَّ belongs to the إنّ family and affects the following nominal structure.

الْمَدْرَسَةُ بَعِيدَةٌ، لَكِنْ أُحِبُّهَا.
The school is far, but I like it.
الْفِلْمُ طَوِيلٌ، وَلَكِنَّهُ مُثِيرٌ.
The film is long, but it is exciting.
الطَّقْسُ بَارِدٌ، وَلَكِنَّ الشَّمْسَ سَاطِعَةٌ.
Stretch: ولكنَّ introduces a nominal clause.
Do not confuse forms: Use لَكِنْ as the straightforward clause linker. Learn common attached forms such as وَلَكِنَّهُ، وَلَكِنَّهَا as useful chunks. Full إنّ-family case behaviour returns in Nominal Sentences.
4

Reason and result: two directions

A reason answers “why?”. A result states what happened because of the earlier cause.

لَمْ أَذْهَبْ لِأَنَّنِي كُنْتُ مَرِيضًا.
Statement → reason.
كُنْتُ مَرِيضًا، لِذَلِكَ لَمْ أَذْهَبْ.
Cause → result.
أُحِبُّ التَّعَلُّمَ عَنْ بُعْدٍ لِأَنَّهُ مَرِنٌ.
Reason with an attached pronoun.
الطَّقْسُ جَمِيلٌ، لِذَا سَنَخْرُجُ.
لذا is a concise result connector.
After لِأَنَّ: Use a noun or attached pronoun as the clause subject: لِأَنَّ الطَّقْسَ..., لِأَنَّهُ..., لِأَنَّنِي.... Do not put a bare independent clause after it without building the structure.

Reason–Result Check

1. Choose a reason for studying Arabic.

2. Choose a result of heavy traffic.

3. Complete: لَمْ أَخْرُجْ ___ الطَّقْسَ كَانَ سَيِّئًا.

4. Complete: أَتْقَنْتُ الْمَهَارَةَ، ___ فُزْتُ بِالْمُسَابَقَةِ.

Upgrade a simple paragraph

Write 90–110 Arabic words comparing two ways of travelling, learning, shopping or spending free time.

Success checklist: Use وَ and أَوْ only where logical; include ثُمَّ or فَـ; include لَكِنْ/ولكنّه; include a reason with لِأَنَّ and a consequence with لِذَلِكَ or لِذَا.

2. Alternative connector.

3. Ordered later step.

4. Immediate next action/result.

5. Contrast connector.

6. Reason connector.

What you can now do

  • Choose a connector by logical function.
  • Distinguish ثُمَّ from immediate فَـ.
  • Build contrast with لَكِنْ and reason with لِأَنَّ.
  • Link cause to consequence with لِذَلِكَ or لِذَا.

Spaced revisit: Return in two or three days and complete the final check again without looking at the tables.
