الْمُعَلِّمَةُ الَّتِي تُدَرِّسُنَا
the teacher who teaches us

Relative pronouns connect ideas

Relative pronouns prevent repetition and allow Arabic sentences to carry more precise information.

أَعْرِفُ الْوَلَدَ.
I know the boy.
+
الْوَلَدُ يَسْكُنُ هُنَا.
The boy lives here.
Join the ideas:
أَعْرِفُ الْوَلَدَ الَّذِي يَسْكُنُ هُنَا.
I know the boy who lives here.

Extra information
يَدْرُسُ كَثِيرًا
الطَّالِبُ الَّذِي يَدْرُسُ كَثِيرًا مُجْتَهِدٌ.
The student who studies a lot is hardworking.
Terminology: the noun being described is the antecedent. The words after the relative pronoun form the relative clause.
Notice · الْمُطَابَقَةُ

The relative pronoun agrees with the noun

Masculine singular

الطَّالِبُ الَّذِي يَكْتُبُ

Not الطَّالِبُ الَّتِي.

Feminine singular

الطَّالِبَةُ الَّتِي تَكْتُبُ

Not الطَّالِبَةُ الَّذِي.

Masculine / mixed plural

الطُّلَّابُ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُبُونَ

Feminine plural

الطَّالِبَاتُ اللَّاتِي يَكْتُبْنَ
Agreement is cumulative: check the antecedent, choose the correct relative pronoun, then make the verb agree with the person or group inside the relative clause.
Deepen · التَّعْرِيفُ وَالتَّنْكِيرُ

Definite nouns normally take a relative pronoun

Definite antecedent

جَاءَ الطَّالِبُ الَّذِي فَازَ.
The student who won came.

Indefinite antecedent

جَاءَ طَالِبٌ فَازَ فِي الْمُسَابَقَةِ.
A student who won the competition came.

Arabic often links the clause directly without an explicit relative pronoun after an indefinite noun.

Do not overgeneralise: English frequently uses “who/which/that” after both definite and indefinite nouns. Arabic treats these structures differently.

How Lesson 5 connects with Lessons 1–4

Lesson 1

Subject pronouns help identify who performs the action inside the relative clause.

الطَّالِبَاتُ اللَّاتِي هُنَّ مُجْتَهِدَاتٌ

Lesson 2

Possessive endings can appear inside a relative clause.

الطَّالِبُ الَّذِي كِتَابُهُ جَدِيدٌ

Lesson 3

Object pronouns can refer back to the antecedent.

الْكِتَابُ الَّذِي قَرَأْتُهُ

Lesson 4

Demonstratives can introduce a noun followed by a relative clause.

هٰذِهِ هِيَ الْمُعَلِّمَةُ الَّتِي تُدَرِّسُنَا
Stretch Insight · الضَّمِيرُ الْعَائِدُ

The resumptive pronoun

Arabic often uses a pronoun inside the relative clause that refers back to the antecedent, especially when the antecedent is the object or appears after a preposition.

هٰذَا هُوَ الْكِتَابُ الَّذِي قَرَأْتُهُ.
This is the book that I read.
هٰذِهِ هِيَ الْمَدْرَسَةُ الَّتِي أَدْرُسُ فِيهَا.
This is the school in which I study.
What refers back? In قَرَأْتُهُ, the object ending ـهُ refers back to الْكِتَابُ. In فِيهَا, ـهَا refers back to الْمَدْرَسَةُ.

There are many students in our school. The student who won the competition is called Samer. The female student who wrote the story is called Layla. These are the students who help their classmates, and that is the teacher who always encourages them. I like the library in which I read, and this is the book that I read last week.

Students must follow long noun phrases and reference chains.

Speaking

Relative clauses extend answers and reduce repetitive short sentences.

Writing

They improve cohesion, precision and sentence variety.

Detailed exam drills: timed reading, extended writing, assessment-criteria practice and paper-specific strategies belong in the separate Mastery & Revision / Exam Skills section.
