Pronouns tell us who is speaking and who is being described
English often hides gender and number inside one word such as you. Arabic makes those distinctions visible. A correct pronoun helps you understand a text, follow a listening passage, choose the right verb form and write with precision.
👂 Track speakers
In listening and reading, pronouns help you work out whether the speaker means one person, two people or a whole group.
🧩 Control agreement
The pronoun controls verb prefixes and endings, and it affects nouns and adjectives used to describe the subject.
💬 Communicate naturally
Use أَنَا، نَحْنُ، هُوَ، هِيَ، هُمْ and the other forms to introduce, compare, explain and refer back to people.
Use the chapter at the depth you need

Every pronoun answers three questions
Do not memorise the list as twelve unrelated words. Build each form from person + number + gender.
1️⃣ Person
First person: the speaker — I / we.
Second person: the person addressed — you.
Third person: someone spoken about — he / she / they.
2️⃣ Number
Singular: one.
Dual: exactly two.
Plural: three or more.
3️⃣ Gender
Arabic distinguishes masculine and feminine in many second- and third-person forms. First-person pronouns do not change for gender.

Singular, dual and plural forms
Learn the full system as a grid. The dual forms are especially important because English usually uses the same word for one person, two people and a group.
| Person | Number / gender | Arabic | Meaning | Useful note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | singular | أَنَا | I | No gender distinction |
| 1st | plural | نَحْنُ | we | No gender distinction; includes the speaker |
| 2nd | singular masculine | أَنْتَ | you | Addressing one male |
| 2nd | singular feminine | أَنْتِ | you | Addressing one female |
| 2nd | dual, both genders | أَنْتُمَا | you two | Two males, two females or a mixed pair |
| 2nd | masculine / mixed plural | أَنْتُمْ | you all | All-male or mixed group |
| 2nd | feminine plural | أَنْتُنَّ | you all | All-female group |
| 3rd | singular masculine | هُوَ | he | One male spoken about |
| 3rd | singular feminine | هِيَ | she | One female spoken about |
| 3rd | dual, both genders | هُمَا | they two | The following verb/adjective may reveal gender |
| 3rd | masculine / mixed plural | هُمْ | they | All-male or mixed group |
| 3rd | feminine plural | هُنَّ | they | All-female group |
👥 Mixed groups
When a group contains males and females, standard Arabic normally uses the masculine plural form:
2️⃣ The dual
هُمَا and أَنْتُمَا do not themselves show gender. Later agreement may show it:

The pronoun controls the present-tense verb form
The beginning and ending of the verb reveal person, number and often gender. This is why the subject pronoun may sometimes be left unstated when the verb already makes the subject clear.
| Pronoun | Meaning | Verb form: دَرَسَ / يَدْرُسُ | Pattern to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| أَنَا | I | أَدْرُسُ | أَـ |
| نَحْنُ | we | نَدْرُسُ | نَـ |
| أَنْتَ | you m. sg. | تَدْرُسُ | تَـ |
| أَنْتِ | you f. sg. | تَدْرُسِينَ | تَـ...ـِينَ |
| أَنْتُمَا | you two | تَدْرُسَانِ | تَـ...ـَانِ |

| أَنْتُنَّ | you f. pl. | تَدْرُسْنَ | تَـ...ـْنَ |
| هُوَ | he | يَدْرُسُ | يَـ |
| هِيَ | she | تَدْرُسُ | تَـ |
| هُمَا | they two, m./mixed | يَدْرُسَانِ | يَـ...ـَانِ |
| هُمَا | they two, f. | تَدْرُسَانِ | تَـ...ـَانِ |
| هُمْ | they m./mixed pl. | يَدْرُسُونَ | يَـ...ـُونَ |
| هُنَّ | they f. pl. | يَدْرُسْنَ | يَـ...ـْنَ |
Same-looking verb forms
أَنْتَ تَدْرُسُ and هِيَ تَدْرُسُ share the same verb form. Context or the explicit pronoun tells you whether it means “you study” or “she studies”.
The feminine dual detail
The pronoun stays هُمَا, but two females take تَدْرُسَانِ; two males or a mixed pair take يَدْرُسَانِ.

Repair the mistakes students make most often
❌ Confusing أَنْتَ and أَنْتِ
Choose by the person you are addressing, not by the speaker.
❌ Using هُنَّ for a mixed group
هُنَّ is for an all-female human group. A mixed group normally uses هُمْ.
❌ Mismatching the verb
Do not write هِيَ يَدْرُسُ. Use هِيَ تَدْرُسُ.
❌ Translating “is” literally
For a simple present description, write هُوَ طَالِبٌ, not a word-for-word English structure.
❌ Treating dual as plural
Exactly two people need أَنْتُمَا / هُمَا, not أَنْتُمْ / هُمْ.
❌ Overusing explicit pronouns
Explicit pronouns are correct, but a verb may already contain the subject. Use the pronoun when it adds clarity, contrast or emphasis.
