The Arabic number system

Arabic distinguishes exactly one, exactly two, and three or more. The dual is not optional when the meaning is exactly two in careful standard Arabic.

NumberMasculine exampleFeminine exampleMeaning
Singularطَالِبٌطَالِبَةٌone student
Dual nominativeطَالِبَانِطَالِبَتَانِtwo students
Dual acc./gen.طَالِبَيْنِطَالِبَتَيْنِtwo students after case trigger
Pluralطُلَّابٌطَالِبَاتٌthree or more
Practical IGCSE rule: Use ـانِ for a dual subject in the nominative; use ـيْنِ after a preposition and in object/genitive positions.
2

Building and using the dual

Masculine / unmarked noun

كِتَابٌ ← كِتَابَانِ / كِتَابَيْنِ
مُعَلِّمٌ ← مُعَلِّمَانِ / مُعَلِّمَيْنِ

Noun ending in ة

مَدْرَسَةٌ ← مَدْرَسَتَانِ / مَدْرَسَتَيْنِ
طَالِبَةٌ ← طَالِبَتَانِ / طَالِبَتَيْنِ

Do not use a numeral plus plural for two. Prefer كِتَابَانِ, not *اِثْنَانِ كُتُبٌ in an ordinary noun phrase.
