Arabic nouns are grammatically masculine or feminine. Biological sex explains some nouns, but grammatical gender also applies to objects, places and ideas.
Many nouns without a feminine marker are masculine: كِتَابٌ، بَيْتٌ، قَلَمٌ، مَطْعَمٌ.
This is a useful starting clue, not an infallible rule.
