Use the chapter at the depth you need

This is a rich revision chapter rather than a single-period script. Revisit sections and games until letter recognition and joining decisions become automatic.

Core

  • Recognise all 28 letters.
  • Distinguish isolated, initial, medial and final forms.
  • Identify the six non-connecting letters.

Develop

  • Build words by applying joining rules.
  • Recognise letters inside unfamiliar words.
  • Write common letter families accurately.

Stretch

  • Explain why a word breaks at a particular point.
  • Analyse letter shape changes independently.
  • Read and copy short unvowelled words accurately.

All 28 Arabic letters

Arabic is written from right to left. Letter names remain the same, but most letters change shape according to their position in a word.

No. Name Isolated Initial Medial Final Connects to following letter?
1 Alif ا / أ ا / أ ـا / ـأ ـا / ـأ No

26 Hāʾ ه هـ ـهـ ـه Yes
27 Wāw و و ـو ـو No
28 Yāʾ ي يـ ـيـ ـي Yes
Important: “Initial” does not always mean the letter changes shape. A non-connecting letter such as د remains visually separate from the letter that follows it.

Quick Check — recognise the letters

1. Which letter is Ghayn?
Ghayn is غ, with a dot above.
2. Which letter has three dots above?
ث belongs to the Bāʾ family and has three dots above.

Four contextual positions

Isolated
ب

The letter stands alone.

Initial
بـ

The letter begins a connected sequence.

Medial
ـبـ

The letter connects on both sides.

Final
ـب

The letter ends a connected sequence.

ب — بـ — ـبـ — ـب
The same letter changes according to its position.
Shape recognition rule: do not memorise four unrelated pictures. Look for the letter’s basic skeleton, then notice which joining strokes appear on the right and left.

Position check

1. What position is ـمـ?
It has joining strokes on both sides, so it is medial.
2. What position is ـع?
It connects from the right and ends the word.
Core Rule · قَاعِدَةُ الِاتِّصَالِ

How letters join

Arabic letters normally connect to the letter before them and the letter after them, provided both letters permit the connection.

Connection test: ask two questions at every boundary: Can the first letter connect forward? Can the next letter receive a connection from the right?

Fully connected

كَتَبَ

كـ + ـتـ + ـب

One break

وَرَقَة

The و does not connect to ر.

Several breaks

زَارَ

ز, ا and ر break forward connections.

Joining decisions

1. Should ب + ت connect?
Both letters permit the connection: بت.
2. Should د + ر connect?
د never connects to the following letter.
Critical Pattern · الحُرُوفُ الَّتِي لَا تَتَّصِلُ بَعْدَهَا

The six forward non-connectors

These letters can connect to the letter before them, but they never connect to the letter that follows them.

ا / أ
Alif
د
Dāl
ذ
Dhāl
ر
Rāʾ
ز
Zāy
و
Wāw
Memory line: أ د ذ ر ز و. When one of these appears, the next letter begins a new visible shape.
Word Where is the break? Explanation
وَلَد after و Wāw does not connect forward.
مَدْرَسَة after د Dāl does not connect to Rāʾ.
زَهْرَة after ز and ر Both are forward non-connectors.
قُرْآن after ر and آ Rāʾ and Alif do not connect forward.

Non-connector check

1. Which letter never connects forward?
و is one of the six forward non-connectors.
2. How many visible breaks are caused by non-connectors in زَهْرَة?
There is a break after ز and another after ر.
Shape Families · عَائِلَاتُ الحُرُوفِ

Learn families, not isolated pictures

Many Arabic letters share the same body shape. Dots distinguish members of the family.

Bāʾ family

ب ت ث ن ي

Similar bowls and joining strokes; dot patterns distinguish them.

Jīm family

ج ح خ

Same body: dot below, no dot, dot above.

Dāl family

د ذ

Same non-connecting body; Dhāl has a dot.

Rāʾ family

ر ز

Same non-connecting body; Zāy has a dot.

Sīn family

س ش

Shīn has three dots above.

Ṣād family

ص ض

Ḍād adds one dot above.

Ṭāʾ family

ط ظ

Ẓāʾ adds one dot above.

ʿAyn family

ع غ

Ghayn adds one dot above.

Family check

1. Which member of the Jīm family has a dot above?
خ has a dot above.
2. Which letter shares the body of Ṣād and adds a dot?
ض is the dotted member of the Ṣād family.
Handwriting Lab · مَعْمَلُ الخَطِّ

Write with direction, proportion and joining control

Stroke discipline

  • Begin on the right.
  • Keep dots clear and correctly placed.
  • Maintain the writing line.
  • Do not add spaces inside a connected sequence.
  • Leave a visible break only after a non-connector.

Copy–cover–write–check

  1. Copy the word carefully.
  2. Cover it.
  3. Write it from memory.
  4. Check every joining boundary.
  5. Circle the letters that caused errors.

Reading — letter hunt

مَدْرَسَةٌ · بَيْتٌ · زَهْرَةٌ · كِتَابٌ · وَلَدٌ · قَمَرٌ
  1. Find every non-connector.
  2. Circle letters in medial position.
  3. Underline final letters.
  4. Explain the visible break in two words.

Listening — sound to letter

Listen without looking. Ask a partner or reader to say each letter name twice, then write the correct isolated letter in order.

أ د ذ ر ز و.
