Direction imperatives for male, female and plural addressees

أَفْعَالُ الأَمْرِ لِإِعْطَاءِ الاِّتِّجَاهَاتِ

Direction commands must match the person or group being addressed. Teach the three forms as a system and sequence them with ثُمَّ and بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

اِذْهَبْ مُسْتَقِيمًا.
Go straight (to one male).

Masculine singular command.

اِنْعَطِفِي يَسَارًا.
Turn left (to one female).

Feminine command ends ـي.

اِعْبُرُوا الجِسْرَ.
Cross the bridge (to a group).

Plural command ends ـوا.

ثُمَّ خُذْ الشَّارِعَ الثَّانِيَ.
Then take the second street.

Use sequence language and an ordinal.

1

Command one male person

اِذْهَبْ · اِمْشِ · اِنْعَطِفْ · خُذْ

The masculine singular command is the dictionary-style command used in many signs and basic directions.

اِذْهَبْ مُسْتَقِيمًا.اِنْعَطِفْ يَمِينًا عِنْدَ الإِشَارَةِ.خُذْ الشَّارِعَ الثَّانِيَ.
2

Command one female person

اِذْهَبِي · اِمْشِي · اِنْعَطِفِي · خُذِي

Add the long ـي ending when speaking to one female person.

اِذْهَبِي مُسْتَقِيمًا.اِنْعَطِفِي يَسَارًا.خُذِي الحَافِلَةَ رَقْمَ خَمْسَةٍ.
3

Command a group

اِذْهَبُوا · اِمْشُوا · اِنْعَطِفُوا · خُذُوا

Use ـوا when directing two or more people as a group.

اِمْشُوا حَتَّى الدَّوَّارِ.اِعْبُرُوا الجِسْرَ ثُمَّ اِنْعَطِفُوا يَمِينًا.
4

Sequence a complete route

فِعْلُ أَمْرٍ + ثُمَّ / بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ + فِعْلُ أَمْرٍ

A useful route contains ordered actions, landmarks and a clear endpoint.

اِذْهَبْ مُسْتَقِيمًا حَتَّى إِشَارَةِ المَرُورِ، ثُمَّ اِنْعَطِفْ يَسَارًا.بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ، اِعْبُرِ الشَّارِعَ.

1

Directions are more than right and left: a complete route uses a starting point, ordered actions, landmarks and an endpoint.

2

Signs are often short and unvowelled in the real world, so secure recognition of the whole word is important.
