Two colour patternsنَمَطَانِ لِصِيَاغَةِ الأَلْوَانِ

Do not add ة automatically. First identify which pattern the colour follows.

Pattern 1 · changes completely

أَفْعَلُ ← فَعْلَاءُ

Six high-frequency colours have a broken feminine pattern.

أَحْمَرُ ← حَمْرَاءُأَزْرَقُ ← زَرْقَاءُأَخْضَرُ ← خَضْرَاءُأَصْفَرُ ← صَفْرَاءُأَبْيَضُ ← بَيْضَاءُأَسْوَدُ ← سَوْدَاءُ
Pattern 2 · add ة

ـِيٌّ ← ـِيَّةٌ

Many colour words behave like regular nisba adjectives.

بُرْتُقَالِيٌّ ← بُرْتُقَالِيَّةٌبَنَفْسَجِيٌّ ← بَنَفْسَجِيَّةٌبُنِّيٌّ ← بُنِّيَّةٌرَمَادِيٌّ ← رَمَادِيَّةٌوَرْدِيٌّ ← وَرْدِيَّةٌذَهَبِيٌّ ← ذَهَبِيَّةٌفِضِّيٌّ ← فِضِّيَّةٌ
Common mistake
