Greetings do more than translate “hello”. They open interaction, acknowledge another person, show goodwill and establish the tone of what follows.

For ح, let air pass through a gently narrowed throat without voicing.
Start the sound in the throat. Do not replace it with a long vowel.
A long vowel lasts roughly twice as long as its short partner in careful practice.
-ka addresses one male; -ki addresses one female in MSA.

12 minutes · One small vowel, one important choice
Address one person accurately كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ أَمْ كَيْفَ حَالُكِ؟
In careful MSA speech, the short vowel on the final ك tells the listener whether the question addresses one male or one female.

What changes—and what does not?
- Same: كَيْفَ حَالُـ “how is the condition/state of…”
- Male: ـكَ pronounced -ka.
- Female: ـكِ pronounced -ki.
- Unvowelled text: both normally appear as كيف حالك؟; context supplies the reading.
Respectful workaround: if you do not know which singular
form a person uses, كَيْفَ الحَالُ؟ (kayfa l-ḥāl?, “how
are things?”) avoids a gendered suffix. Follow the person’s own language and the person’s own language.
