Results, rules and admiration

النَّتَائِجُ وَالقَوَاعِدُ وَالإِعْجَابُ

Three structures carry this lesson: reporting a result, stating a rule, and saying why you admire someone. Each has a fixed preposition or a fixed verb form — check it before you choose.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

فَازَ بِالمِيدَالِيَةِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِ
What to notice

بِـ marks the prize won, and the noun after it is genitive.

يَجِبُ عَلَى اللَّاعِبِينَ أَنْ يَتَدَرَّبُوا
What to notice

Genitive after عَلَى, subjunctive after أَنْ.

أُعْجَبُ بِتَوَاضُعِهِ
What to notice

أُعْجَبُ is passive in form and always takes بِـ.

1

Reporting a win

فَازَ + بِـ (the prize) / عَلَى (the opponent)

بِـ introduces what was won; عَلَى introduces who was beaten. Both are followed by the genitive.

فَازَ بِالمِيدَالِيَةِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِفَازَ عَلَى الفَرِيقِ الضَّيْفِ
2

Losing and drawing

خَسِرَ + object / تَعَادَلَ + الفَرِيقَانِ

خَسِرَ takes a direct object or فِي with a match. تَعَادَلَ is Form VI, a mutual action, so its subject is usually dual or plural.

خَسِرَ الفَرِيقُ المُبَارَاةَ النِّهَائِيَّةَتَعَادَلَ الفَرِيقَانِ فِي النِّقَاطِ
3

Stating a rule

يَجِبُ عَلَى + person + أَنْ + subjunctive

The person obliged follows عَلَى in the genitive; the action follows أَنْ in the subjunctive. مَمْنُوعٌ introduces a prohibition with a verbal noun.

يَجِبُ عَلَى اللَّاعِبِينَ أَنْ يَحْتَرِمُوا الحَكَمَمَمْنُوعٌ لَمْسُ الكُرَةِ بِاليَدَيْنِ
4

Expressing admiration

يُعْجِبُنِي + subject / أُعْجَبُ بِـ + genitive

With يُعْجِبُنِي the admired person is the grammatical subject. أُعْجَبُ is a passive form and is fixed with بِـ.

يُعْجِبُنِي هٰذَا اللَّاعِبُأُعْجَبُ بِتَوَاضُعِهِ
StructureWhat follows itExample
فَازَ بِـgenitive — the prizeفَازَ بِالمِيدَالِيَةِ

أُعْجَبُ بِـgenitiveأُعْجَبُ بِإِنْجَازِهِ
1
فَازَ بِـ and فَازَ عَلَى do different jobs

Use بِـ for the thing won — فَازَ بِالبُطُولَةِ. Use عَلَى for the opponent beaten — فَازَ عَلَى الفَرِيقِ المِصْرِيِّ. Choosing the wrong preposition changes who or what you are talking about.
