Collocation, frequency and preference

التَّلَازُمُ اللَّفْظِيُّ وَالتَّكْرَارُ وَالتَّفْضِيلُ

Three systems carry this lesson: choosing the right verb for the activity, saying how often, and ranking two activities against each other. Study each in context and compare an accurate sentence with a plausible but wrong one.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

يَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ القَدَمِ
What to notice

Ball game after يَلْعَبُ, and the object is accusative.

يَعْزِفُ عَلَى العُودِ
What to notice

عَلَى is fixed with يَعْزِفُ, and the instrument is genitive.

مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الأُسْبُوعِ
What to notice

مَرَّتَيْنِ is the dual of مَرَّةٌ, not a plural.

1

يَلْعَبُ with ball games

يَلْعَبُ + accusative ball-game noun

يَلْعَبُ is used for games played with a ball or a board. The noun that follows is the direct object and therefore accusative.

يَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ القَدَمِتَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ السَّلَّةِ
2

يُمَارِسُ with an activity noun

يُمَارِسُ + accusative activity noun

يُمَارِسُ suits a sustained activity or discipline rather than a game. The activity noun that follows is accusative.

يُمَارِسُ السِّبَاحَةَتُمَارِسُ رِيَاضَةَ اليُوغَا
3

يَعْزِفُ عَلَى with an instrument

يَعْزِفُ عَلَى + genitive instrument

The preposition عَلَى is fixed with يَعْزِفُ, and the instrument after it is genitive. The Cambridge list also records the verbal noun form العَزْفُ بِـ, so recognise both.

يَعْزِفُ عَلَى العُودِتَعْزِفُ عَلَى البِيَانُو
4

Frequency after a number

مَرَّةً / مَرَّتَيْنِ / ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ + فِي + period

مَرَّةً is adverbial and accusative. مَرَّتَيْنِ is the dual. From three to ten the counted noun becomes a genitive plural: ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ.

مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الأُسْبُوعِثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فِي الشَّهْرِ
VerbWhat follows itExample
يَلْعَبُaccusative ball-game nounيَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ السَّلَّةِ
يُمَارِسُaccusative activity nounيُمَارِسُ رِيَاضَةَ اليُوغَا
يَعْزِفُ عَلَىgenitive instrumentيَعْزِفُ عَلَى العُودِ
يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَىgenitive sound nounيَسْتَمِعُ إِلَى المُوسِيقَى
1
Learn the whole collocation, not the single verb

Arabic chooses a different verb for different kinds of activity. يَلْعَبُ goes with ball games, يُمَارِسُ with an activity noun, يَعْزِفُ عَلَى with an instrument and يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَى with sound. Store the verb, the preposition and the noun together as one unit.

2
The syllabus lists many hobbies as verbal nouns

The Cambridge list gives السِّبَاحَةُ، الرَّسْمُ، القِرَاءَةُ، الغِنَاءُ، رُكُوبُ الدَّرَّاجَةِ — verbal nouns rather than verbs. Learn both shapes: the verbal noun for lists and headings, the verb for saying what you personally do.

أَلْعَبُ السِّبَاحَةَ.

أُمَارِسُ السِّبَاحَةَ.

السِّبَاحَة is an activity, not a ball game, so it takes يُمَارِسُ.

أَعْزِفُ البِيَانُو.

أَعْزِفُ عَلَى البِيَانُو.

يَعْزِفُ needs the preposition عَلَى before the instrument.

ثَلَاثَ مَرَّةٍ فِي الشَّهْرِ

ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فِي الشَّهْرِ

Numbers from three to ten are followed by a genitive plural.
