Second-person present forms and question architecture

صِيَغُ المُخَاطَبِ وَبِنَاءُ السُّؤَالِ

The masculine singular present usually begins with تَـ and has no final يـن, while the feminine singular adds ـين. Question words select the information type and prevent vague answers.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

مَتَى تَسْتَيْقِظِينَ فِي أَيَّامِ الدِّرَاسَةِ؟
When do you wake on school days? — to a girl

Feminine ending ـين.

كَمْ مَرَّةً تَتَمَرَّنُ فِي الأُسْبُوعِ؟
How often do you train each week? — to a boy

Frequency question.

أَخْبِرِينِي أَكْثَرَ عَنْ رُوتِينِكِ.
Tell me more about your routine — to a girl.

Interview extension.

لِمَاذَا تُفَضِّلُ هٰذَا الوَقْتَ؟
Why do you prefer this time? — to a boy.

Reason follow-up.

1

Ask a masculine listener

أَنْتَ تَفْعَلُ / تَسْتَيْقِظُ / تَذْهَبُ

Use the basic second-person form without ـين.

مَاذَا تَفْعَلُ بَعْدَ المَدْرَسَةِ؟مَتَى تَسْتَيْقِظُ؟كَيْفَ تَذْهَبُ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ؟
2

Ask a feminine listener

أَنْتِ تَفْعَلِينَ / تَسْتَيْقِظِينَ / تَذْهَبِينَ

Add ـين to the five-verb form when addressing one female.

مَاذَا تَفْعَلِينَ فِي المَسَاءِ؟كَمْ مَرَّةً تَتَمَرَّنِينَ؟مَتَى تَنَامِينَ؟
3

Match the question word to the answer

مَتَى → time · كَمْ مَرَّةً → frequency · لِمَاذَا → reason

The expected answer must fit the information requested.

مَتَى تَعُودُ؟ — فِي الرَّابِعَةِ.كَمْ مَرَّةً تَقْرَأِينَ؟ — مَرَّتَيْنِ.لِمَاذَا تَسْتَيْقِظُ مُبَكِّرًا؟ — لِأَنَّ...
4

Build a follow-up from the answer

إِجَابَةٌ → سُؤَالُ تَفْصِيلٍ

Listen to the answer, select one new detail, then ask for time, frequency, cause or evaluation.

أَتَمَرَّنُ بَعْدَ المَدْرَسَةِ. — كَمْ مَرَّةً؟أَذْهَبُ بِالحَافِلَةِ. — لِمَاذَا لَا تَمْشِي؟رُوتِينِي مُزْدَحِمٌ. — مَا أَصْعَبُ جُزْءٍ فِيهِ؟

A strong interview moves from fact to detail to reason: when? how often? why?

2

Choose the second-person ending according to the listener, not according to the speaker.
